# Jigglypuff

Balloon Pokémon · Normal/Fairy-type

![Jigglypuff official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/39.webp)

Jigglypuff is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Balloon Pokémon, number 39 (#0039) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 5.5 kg.

Jigglypuff is the Balloon Pokémon that sings a lullaby tuned to the brain waves of someone in deep sleep, so nobody who listens stays awake. It never pauses to breathe while it sings, and the Pokédex says its voice covers more than 12 octaves.

## How to pronounce Jigglypuff

Jigglypuff is pronounced **JIG-lee-puf**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is プリン (Purin).

## Lore

### Biology

Jigglypuff is a pink Pokémon with a round, air-filled body, pointed ears with black insides, big blue eyes, stubby arms and a curled tuft of fur. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 5.5 kg. Bulbapedia notes it can deflate flat in Pokémon Stadium.

### Behaviour

Jigglypuff mesmerises opponents with its eyes, puffs itself up and sings a soothing, mysterious melody. If the listener resists sleep, it keeps singing and, the Pokédex warns, can endanger its own life that way. Its songs differ from region to region, and some sound like shouting.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists it as a grassland Pokémon, and Bulbapedia says lush plains and meadows. In Scarlet and Violet it is found around Paldea's South and West Provinces, and in Legends: Z-A it appears wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Cute Charm can infatuate attackers that make contact, Competitive sharply raises its Special Attack when its stats are lowered, and its hidden Ability is Friend Guard. It uses Sing, Hyper Voice, Disarming Voice and Double-Edge. With base HP 115 but Defense 20 and Special Defense 25, it is built to put foes to sleep, not to take hits.

### Name origin

Jigglypuff may combine 'jiggly' with 'puff', meaning a burst of air or to swell up. The Japanese name is Purin (プリン), which may refer to purin (pudding) for its soft body.

### Design inspiration

Jigglypuff appears to be based on a balloon, with its soft fur and singing perhaps recalling musical plush toys that lull children to sleep. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Jigglypuff evolves from Igglybuff through high friendship and into Wigglytuff with a Moon Stone.

### In the games

Jigglypuff is a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series, where it floats by gulping air. In Scarlet and Violet it is a wild Pokémon, and Legends: Z-A offers it by trade, with wild ones in the Mega Dimension DLC.

### In the anime

Jigglypuff debuted in 'The Song of Jigglypuff', then followed Ash and his friends through the original series, trying to finish a song without the audience falling asleep and scribbling on the faces of anyone who nodded off. A Trainer's Jigglypuff also battled Ash's Charmander in the film 'I Choose You!'.

### Fun facts

- In a 1999 interview, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai said Clefairy was also considered for the first game as a Kirby-style clone before Jigglypuff was chosen.
- Only Jigglypuff and Igglybuff have a catch rate of 170.
- Bulbapedia says Jigglypuff can be caught in the wild in more core series games than any other Pokémon.
- An oversight leaves Jigglypuff purple instead of pink in the Pokémon Blue intro battle against Gengar.
