Wish Pokémon · Steel/Psychic-type

![Jirachi official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/385.webp)

Jirachi is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Wish Pokémon, number 385 (#0385) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1.1 kg.

Jirachi is the Wish Pokémon, a small Steel and Psychic Mythical said to grant any wish, but it wakes for only seven days once every thousand years. The rest of the time it sleeps inside a crystal shell.

## How to pronounce Jirachi

Jirachi is pronounced **jih-RAH-chee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Jirachi said out loud:

In Japanese it is ジラーチ.

## Lore

### Biology

Jirachi has a small, white, humanoid body, 0.3 m tall and 1.1 kg. Three points on its yellow head each carry a teal paper tag, and two yellow streamers trail from its back like the tails of a comet. A seam on its belly hides a third eye, called its true eye, which is yellow with a cyan pupil. The Pokédex says a tough crystalline shell wraps its body while it sleeps.

### Behaviour

Jirachi sleeps almost all its life, and the Pokédex says a pure singing voice can rouse it. It is not helpless: the Ruby entry says that if it senses danger it fights without waking. The legend is that wishes written on the notes on its head come true when it wakes.

### Habitat

The Pokédex names no home, but Jirachi's habitat category is Mountain, and Bulbapedia says it is extremely rare there. Serebii says Scarlet and Violet need a transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Jirachi's only Ability is Serene Grace, which doubles the chance of a move's extra effect, so Iron Head and Zen Headbutt make foes flinch twice as often. Its signature move is Doom Desire, a bundle of light that strikes the target two turns after it is used. It can also heal with Wish and Life Dew, and boost itself with Cosmic Power. All six base stats are 100, so it is an even, flexible all-rounder.

### Name origin

Jirachi may come from the Russian zhelat' ('to wish'), and could also involve the jinn of Arabic tales or the Japanese sachi ('fortune'). The Japanese name is Jirachi (ジラーチ), the same as the English.

### Design inspiration

Jirachi appears to be based on wishing upon a star. Its star-shaped head and comet-tail streamers fit that, and the paper tags look like tanzaku, the strips on which wishes are written at Japan's Tanabata star festival. Its genie-like wish-granting could also echo the jinn. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Jirachi's Pokédex entries begin in Ruby and Sapphire, but players could only get one through special distributions. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky it is the last opponent of the special episode 'Bidoof's Wish', and the astronomer of the Expedition Society in Super Mystery Dungeon. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives through Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Jirachi starred in the film Jirachi: Wish Maker, waking when the Millennium Comet passes and choosing Max as its friend before sleeping again. Its television debut was 'Searching for a Wish!', where it grants a girl named Gemma's wish to restore her valley.

### Fun facts

- The Jirachi given out through Pokémon Channel and the North American Colosseum Bonus Disc were never meant to be Shiny, but a set of bugs let some be.
- In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, one slot-machine prize lets you try to catch Jirachi by hitting it three times within 30 seconds.
- Jirachi has no gender in the core games, but Super Mystery Dungeon refers to it as male.
- Of the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon from before Generation IV, Bulbapedia says only Jirachi never appeared in a Pokémon Ranger game.
