Human Shape Pokémon · Ice/Psychic-type

![Jynx official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/124.webp)

Jynx is a [Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Human Shape Pokémon, number 124 (#0124) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 40.6 kg.

Jynx is the Human Shape Pokémon, a female-only Ice and Psychic type whose cries sound like human speech that nobody has decoded. The Pokédex says it seems to communicate by dancing, and that people who watch it can be drawn into dancing along.

## How to pronounce Jynx

Jynx is pronounced **JINKS**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is ルージュラ (Rougela).

## Lore

### Biology

Jynx is a humanoid, 1.4 m tall and 40.6 kg, with a purple face, pink lips, long blonde hair and a red gown with a pair of gold circlets. The games draw nothing but darkness beneath its dress and give it no footprint, yet it can learn the kicking move Triple Axel; the anime episode 'Stage Fight!' gave it feet.

### Behaviour

Jynx has several cry patterns, and the Pokédex says it seems to dance to communicate, changing its rhythm with its mood. Some musicians write songs for Jynx to sing, and Galar's Jynx often have beautiful voices and a fan base. In parts of Galar it was once feared and worshipped as the Queen of Ice.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is urban. Jynx is not obtainable in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Oblivious and Forewarn, with Dry Skin hidden. It learns Powder Snow, Ice Punch, Psychic and Blizzard, alongside Lovely Kiss, Sing and Perish Song. With 115 base Special Attack and 95 base Speed it is a fast special attacker.

### Name origin

Jynx may be a corruption of 'jinx', a curse of bad luck. The Japanese name is Rougela (ルージュラ), which may blend 'rouge', the make-up, with the French geler ('to freeze').

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia dates Jynx's first documented design to around 1992 to 1993. Its face was originally black; after criticism in 2000 that this resembled a racist stereotype, Game Freak recoloured it purple. Bulbapedia calls gyaru street fashion a likely inspiration, with the yuki-onna, a snow spirit whose feet go unseen, as another possibility. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Jynx evolves from Smoochum at level 30. Smoochum is a baby Pokémon added in Generation II.

### In the games

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, even the player, who is a Pokémon too, cannot make out Jynx's speech. A Generation I original, it could only be had in the international Red and Blue by trading a Poliwhirl in Cerulean City.

### In the anime

Many Jynx debut as workers in Santa's workshop in 'Holiday Hi-Jynx', where Ash and his friends help a lost one get home. In 'Three Jynx and a Baby!', three Jynx sisters in Cremini Town guard their Smoochum sister, who evolves into a fourth Jynx.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Jynx is the only Pokémon with Dry Skin as its Hidden Ability.
- Jynx alone, as far as Bulbapedia knows, learns Lovely Kiss by levelling up.
- In the Pokémon Stadium games, Jynx's kick animation shows a pair of feet that pop into view unattached to its body.
- Pokémon HOME contains an unused Jynx cry whose file name and reverb match those of a Mega Evolution.
