![Kartana official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/798.webp)

Kartana is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Drawn Sword Pokémon, number 798 (#0798) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 0.1 kg.

Kartana is the Drawn Sword Pokémon, an Ultra Beast that looks like a folded paper figure but is sharp enough that the Pokédex says it cut down a gigantic steel tower with a single stroke.

## How to pronounce Kartana

Kartana is pronounced **kar-TAH-nuh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Kartana is 0.3 m tall and weighs 0.1 kg. It looks like origami folded from a single sheet that is white on one face and orange on the reverse, with a star-shaped mark where a face should be that opens and closes like a paper fortune teller. Its long, thin arms are blades, and Bulbapedia says fire and moisture are its weak spots.

### Behaviour

The Ultra Sun entry calls its paper-thin body a sharpened sword, and the Sun entry says it does not seem to go after enemies on its own, though its razor body is a weapon in itself. Bulbapedia says any opponent who strikes at it is cut down by its blades.

### Habitat

Its home world is the Ultra Forest. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability is Beast Boost, which raises its best stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. Its base Attack of 181 is the highest of any Grass or Steel type, according to Bulbapedia, backed by 131 Defense and 109 Speed. It slashes with Leaf Blade, Sacred Sword, Night Slash and Smart Strike and sharpens up with Swords Dance. The price is a Special Defense of just 31, the lowest of any Steel type.

### Name origin

Kartana may combine 'katana' with 'card', 'art' or charta (Latin for paper), and may also involve Curtana, a British ceremonial sword. The Japanese name is Kamiturugi (カミツルギ), which may combine two readings of kami, 'paper' and 'deity', with tsurugi, 'sword'.

### Design inspiration

Kartana's look seems to come from origami and samurai. Bulbapedia suggests noshi, the folded paper ornament attached to gifts, or shikigami, paper figures that priests imbue with spiritual power. It may also draw on the folktale hero Issun-boshi. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Kartana is a Sun exclusive found on Route 17 or in Malie Garden in Sun and Moon, its first games. Ultra Sun sends you to the Ultra Forest instead, and Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra later added it to the Max Lair.

### In the anime

Kartana debuted in 'Living on the Cutting Edge!', slicing through objects on Melemele Island before it cut a falling meteor into harmless pieces and saved the Pokémon School. It then opened a new Ultra Wormhole by slashing the air and went home.

### Fun facts

- At 0.1 kg it shares the title of lightest Pokémon with Cosmog, Gastly, Haunter, Flabébé and Roaming Form Gimmighoul, which Bulbapedia says may mirror Celesteela being the heaviest.
- In the anime it can speak human language, but in reverse.
- Its English codename is UB-04 Blade, but the Japanese version reads Slash.
- In Sun and Moon its catch rate is 255, so with a Beast Ball's 5 times boost Bulbapedia says you can never fail to catch one.
- In Pokémon GO it is generally found in the Northern Hemisphere, and Celesteela in the Southern.
