Kecleon is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Color Swap Pokémon, number 352 (#0352) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 22 kg.

Kecleon is the Color Swap Pokémon, a chameleon that blends into its surroundings to sneak up on prey, with one flaw: it cannot change the red zigzag stripe on its belly.

## How to pronounce Kecleon

Kecleon is pronounced **KEK-lee-on**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Kecleon is an upright, lizard-like Pokémon, 1 m tall and 22 kg, usually green, with yellow frills flanking its head, yellow lips and eye rings, and that red zigzag stripe around its middle. Its hands and feet have three digits each, its soles are yellow, and its thin tail is usually curled into a spiral. A long, stretchy pink tongue shoots out to ensnare prey.

### Behaviour

Kecleon changes colour at will to match its surroundings, and its shade also shifts with mood and health: the Pokédex says the darker the colour, the healthier it is. If it is startled it reverts to its original colours, and if it is ignored for too long it sulks and may never come out of hiding.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists a forest habitat, and Bulbapedia says it lives in tropical and temperate forests.

### Powers

Its Ability Color Change makes its type match the move that hits it, and its Hidden Ability Protean changes its type to match each move it uses. It learns Shadow Sneak, Slash, Camouflage, Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch and Synchronoise by levelling up. With base Special Defense 120 and Attack 90 it can take special hits and strike back.

### Name origin

Kecleon and its Japanese name Kakureon (カクレオン) may both combine kakureru, 'to hide', with 'chameleon'.

### Design inspiration

Kecleon looks like a chameleon, and Bulbapedia says it appears to be modelled on the panther chameleon or the Cape dwarf chameleon.

### In the games

In the Mystery Dungeon games Kecleon run the shops, and shoplifting brings angry high-level Kecleon down on you. In the core series it debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, found on Routes 118 to 121 and 123 of Hoenn, and in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire one hides invisibly in Lavaridge Town's left hot spring until a Devon Scope reveals it. It is not in Scarlet and Violet, and in Legends: Z-A it comes by trade in the base game and wild in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Two Kecleon debuted in 'The Kecleon Caper', owned by Madison and Alexa, who called them Reddy and Greeny. In 'Playing with Fire' and 'Johto Photo Finish', Harrison used a Kecleon against Ash's Pikachu at the Silver Conference.

### Fun facts

- Kecleon was the first Pokémon in the anime to officially show off an Ability.
- Files inside Pokémon Colosseum mark Kecleon as an intended Shadow Pokémon several times, according to Bulbapedia.
- Kecleon is the toughest Pokémon to recruit in Red and Blue Rescue Team: you need level 90 or above and a Friend Bow, and even then the chance is only 0.1%.
- Kecleon was the final Generation III species to arrive in Pokémon GO, on 7 January 2023.
