![Keldeo official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/647.webp)

Keldeo is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Fighting](https://pokee.si/types/fighting)-type Pokémon, the Colt Pokémon, number 647 (#0647) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 48.5 kg.

Keldeo is the Colt Pokémon, a young water-running Mythical that was trained by three older heroes and fights with a sword made from its own horn. Teach it the move Secret Sword and it changes form.

## How to pronounce Keldeo

## Lore

### Biology

Keldeo is a cream-coloured, colt-like Pokémon, 1.4 m tall and 48.5 kg, with a red feathery mane, a single curved horn and backwards-facing blue hooves that shoot out water. Its tail is pale blue and spotted, and looks like a feather in a hat. Keldeo has no gender.

### Behaviour

Keldeo is a restless traveller. The Pokédex says it crosses the world, running over oceans and rivers, and shows up at scenic waterfronts, where it glides as if skating by blasting water from its hooves. Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion taught it to fight, and it keeps moving in search of more training. It excels at kicking moves.

### Habitat

The Pokédex has no fixed habitat for it: it roams, and turns up at waterfronts. In Scarlet and Violet it can only come from Pokémon HOME or an event. Legends: Z-A has it in the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose, after a special scan.

### Powers

Its Ability Justified raises Attack when it takes damage from a Dark move. Its signature move is Secret Sword, which Bulbapedia says is known to be learnable by Keldeo alone, and which sits at level 1 in its Scarlet and Violet moves. When Keldeo knows it, Keldeo changes to its Resolute Form: its horn grows into a long, ridged blade-like horn and three coloured feathers sprout beside its head. The Pokédex says its jumps then become too fast to follow, and that the plume stands for the hopes of its allies. Both forms have the same stats: Special Attack 129 and Speed 108 make it a quick, special-attacking Water and Fighting type.

### Name origin

Keldeo may blend 'kelpie', the Celtic water horse, with the Japanese keru, 'to kick', and 'rodeo'. The Japanese name is Keldeo (ケルディオ), and Bulbapedia says it may also involve Italian dio, 'god'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia thinks Keldeo most likely draws on the kelpie, and perhaps on the kirin, the Chinese unicorn that walks on water. As the youngest member of the Swords of Justice, it may also echo d'Artagnan, the newcomer of The Three Musketeers, whose feathered cap its tail resembles. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Keldeo reached the games as an event Mythical in Generation V, and its Resolute Form arrived with Black 2 and White 2. With Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion it forms the Swords of Justice.

### In the anime

Keldeo debuted in the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice, where it is training to master Sacred Sword in order to join the Swords of Justice. Like the other Legendary Pokémon in that film, it speaks through telepathy.

### Fun facts

- Its Attack and Special Attack are the reverse of Terrakion's, while all their other base stats match exactly.
- Unlike the three Pokémon who taught it, its name does not end in -ion, and it sits at number 647 in the Pokédex instead of next to them at 638 to 640.
- Unlike Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion, it cannot learn Quick Attack; it gets the watery variation Aqua Jet instead.
- Keldeo's Resolute Form was first shown on 13 June 2012, in CoroCoro's July issue, four months after Keldeo itself.
