Komala is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Drowsing Pokémon, number 775 (#0775) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 19.9 kg.

Komala is the Drowsing Pokémon, a koala-like Normal type that sleeps from the day it is born to the day it dies, yet still eats, walks and battles. The Pokédex says its movements are only the result of tossing and turning in its dreams.

## Lore

### Biology

Komala is a blue-grey koala, 0.4 m (1'04") tall and 19.9 kg (43.9 lb), with big rounded ears, fluffy white eyebrows, a large black nose and eyes that are always shut. It is usually seen hugging a short wooden log, which the Moon Pokédex says its parents gave it at birth. Bulbapedia adds that it can feed, wander and even fight without waking.

### Behaviour

Komala never wakes. Its face sometimes changes as if it knew what was happening around it, but Bulbapedia puts that down to its dreams. If its log is taken away it sleeps badly and thrashes about, and a Trainer it trusts may find it clinging to their arm.

### Habitat

In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the South, East and West Provinces, including Tagtree Thicket, and in 4 star Tera Raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

The Scarlet Pokédex says it feeds on leaves holding a strong poison that only Komala can break down, and the Ultra Moon Pokédex says the sedative effect keeps it asleep.

### Powers

Its only Ability, Comatose, makes it behave as though it is always asleep. It rolls with Rollout, stores power with Stockpile, and hits with Slam, Sucker Punch, Wood Hammer and Thrash. With 115 base Attack and 95 base Special Defense it is a surprisingly strong physical attacker for a sleeper.

### Name origin

Komala may combine 'coma' with 'koala'. The Japanese name is Nekkoara (ネッコアラ), which Bulbapedia links to nekko ('root' or 'stump'), ne ('sleep'), ko ('young animal') and 'koala'.

### Design inspiration

Komala appears to be based on the koala, which can sleep up to twenty hours a day. The log it hugs is likely meant as a body pillow, or dakimakura. Bulbapedia notes that a Shiny Komala's log looks like a forest red gum, a tree koalas live in. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Komala sleeps on Route 11 in Sun and Moon, where it debuted, and it returned in Scarlet and Violet.

### In the anime

Komala debuted in 'The Guardian's Challenge!' as Samson Oak's Pokémon, mostly asleep and ringing the Pokémon School's bell. It also won the school's Pokémon Pancake Race, and from 'A Mission of Ultra Urgency!' it rings the bell frantically whenever the Ultra Guardians are needed.

### Fun facts

- It shares its category name, the Drowsing Pokémon, with Musharna.
- The Violet Pokédex says diluting Komala's drool makes a potent anaesthetic that was used for surgery in the past.
- Bulbapedia says Hypno has been known to hunt Komala in Alola, and seems to prefer them to humans.
