# Kyurem

Boundary Pokémon · Dragon/Ice-type

![Kyurem official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/646.webp)

Kyurem is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)/[Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)-type Pokémon, the Boundary Pokémon, number 646 (#0646) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 3 m tall and weighs 325 kg.

Kyurem is the Boundary Pokémon, a frozen dragon whose icy body is, the Pokédex says, missing pieces that only a hero's truth or ideals can fill. Fused with Reshiram or Zekrom it becomes White or Black Kyurem, tied for the highest base stat total of any Ice type.

## How to pronounce Kyurem

Kyurem is pronounced **KYOOR-em**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Kyurem is a grey-and-blue dragon-like Pokémon, 3 m tall and 325 kg, with blue ice wings, pale horns and a glowing yellow crest. Ice locks its jaws shut, and its right side looks damaged, with a shorter wing and horn. If the wings break, grey tendrils are revealed on its back. Kyurem has no gender.

### Behaviour

Kyurem gives off ultracold air, and the Pokédex says it freezes its own body to keep its cells stable. A power greater than Reshiram's or Zekrom's dwells inside it, but the cold keeps that power bound. Bulbapedia says it can use its tendrils to turn Reshiram or Zekrom back into stones and absorb them. Unovan legends disagree about its origin: one tells of a meteor crash that carved the Giant Chasm, another says it formed from what was left when the first dragon split in two.

### Habitat

Kyurem is found in the Giant Chasm in Black, White, Black 2 and White 2. In The Indigo Disk it waits in Dalizapa Passage once you take a Kyurem Treat from Snacksworth, and it otherwise arrives by trade or HOME. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability is Pressure, and its signature move is Glaciate, which Bulbapedia says only Kyurem is known to learn by levelling up, at level 80. With the DNA Splicers it absofuses with Reshiram or Zekrom. Black Kyurem (3.3 m, Zekrom's Teravolt, Attack 170) adds Fusion Bolt and Freeze Shock, and White Kyurem (3.6 m, Reshiram's Turboblaze, Special Attack 170) adds Fusion Flare and Ice Burn. Both stay Dragon and Ice with a base stat total of 700. Base Kyurem is a balanced, bulky attacker with 125 HP.

### Name origin

Kyurem may come from the Japanese kyūrei 'rapid cooling', 'grey' and 'zero', with an ending that echoes the 'rom' of Zekrom and the 'ram' of Reshiram. The Japanese name is Kyurem (キュレム).

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Kyurem as the third of the yin and yang trio: where Reshiram and Zekrom are the pair, Kyurem may stand for wuji, the absence of both. It seems to blend a theropod dinosaur with a European dragon, its arms perhaps borrowed from Tyrannosaurus, and its meteor origin may nod to comets, which are largely ice. Its Japanese name also contains mu, 'nothing'. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Kyurem became a bigger part of the story in Black 2 and White 2, where the DNA Splicers create its two fused forms. It first appeared in Black and White, waiting in the Giant Chasm.

### In the anime

Kyurem debuted in all three forms in the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice, where it chases Keldeo. In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages it is one of six Legendary Pokémon hypnotised by a shadow Hoopa, until the hypnosis lifts and it returns home.

### Fun facts

- Its Pokédex entry in Pokémon White is only nine words long, tied with Shellos's for the shortest in the core series, says Bulbapedia.
- In its base form it is the only Pokémon that gives effort points in HP, Attack and Special Attack, one of each.
- Bulbapedia says Kyurem has more different cries than any other Pokémon, five in all.
- Fusing does not teach Kyurem new moves normally: Scary Face and Glaciate are swapped for the fusion moves, which Bulbapedia says no other fusing Pokémon does.
