# Latias

Eon Pokémon · Dragon/Psychic-type

![Latias official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/380.webp)

Latias is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Eon Pokémon, number 380 (#0380) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 40 kg.

Latias is the Eon Pokémon, a female-only Dragon and Psychic jet of a Pokémon that bends light with its glass-like down to turn invisible. It understands human speech, senses emotions, and in the film Pokémon Heroes it even disguises itself as a human.

## How to pronounce Latias

Latias is pronounced **LAH-tee-ahs**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Latias is 1.4 m tall and 40 kg, with a bird-like body styled after a jet plane: red on its rear half and white above, with a blue triangle on its chest and a red mask over part of its face. It has no legs and floats. Its body is covered in glass-like down that refracts light, letting it vanish from sight or change its appearance. It is female-only, with Latios as its male counterpart.

### Behaviour

Latias is gentle, highly intelligent and very sensitive to emotions, and it communicates by telepathy. If it senses hostility, it ruffles its feathers and cries out shrilly to scare the foe off. The Pokédex says it lives in small herds of a few members, rarely meets people or other Pokémon, and vanishes when enemies come near.

### Habitat

The species data lists the water's edge. In Scarlet and Violet, Latias appears in The Indigo Disk's South Province (Area Four) after you give her a Latias Treat from Snacksworth. In Legends: Z-A she comes by trade in the base game, and the Mega Dimension DLC puts one in Hyperspace Lumiose, found with a special scan.

### Powers

Latias has the Ability Levitate and the signature move Mist Ball, a Psychic attack that Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn. She also uses Psychic, Dragon Pulse and Draco Meteor, and can heal with Recover and Wish. With base Special Defense of 130 and Speed of 110, she is a fast, tough support Pokémon. With Latiasite she Mega Evolves, turning purple and gaining horns and wing-like arms; Bulbapedia says her smaller body makes Mega Latias more agile than Mega Latios, and the Z-A Pokédex says she scatters transparent down to confuse enemies.

### Name origin

Latias may combine the Latin lateō ('I lie hidden') with a feminine -as ending. It might also nod to Eos, goddess of dawn in Greek myth, or to Plato's dialogue Critias. The Japanese name is Latias (ラティアス).

### Design inspiration

The Eon pair look like a blend of jet plane, dragon, griffin and bird. Their lack of feet and constant hovering may echo the common swift, whose Latin name Apus means 'without feet', or the martlet, a footless bird of English heraldry. These are fan readings.

### In the games

In Alpha Sapphire, the Eon Flute lets you ride a Mega Latias across Hoenn. She first appeared in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, where she roams Hoenn in Sapphire. In Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, you rescue her in Pitfall Valley, and she and Latios offer to join your team.

### In the anime

Debuted in the film 'Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias', where she helps Ash try to save her brother Latios and the city of Alto Mare. In 'Rocket Revengers!', she shows Ash a vision of Latios in trouble, and in 'Hoopa and the Clash of Ages' a Latias that can Mega Evolve helps protect Hoopa.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says that of all Generation III Pokémon, Latias was the last to turn up in an ordinary anime episode: 'The Road Most Traveled!' in Pokémon Journeys.
- An early pre-alpha sketch shows an unused design that mixes traits of Latias and Blaziken.
- In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Latias swoops in to rescue a ball that falls off the Sapphire Field as long as the Ball Saver is on.
