## Lore

### Biology

Liepard is a slender purple cat speckled with yellow rosettes, with a pink mask marking over its green eyes, long yellow whiskers and a sickle-shaped tail. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 37.5 kg. The Pokédex says its elegant shape comes from the muscles it has developed, which let it run silently at night.

### Behaviour

Liepard sneaks up behind a target and strikes before the victim can react. The Pokédex warns that its gorgeous looks should not fool you. In Galar it contests territory with Thievul.

### Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat. In Black and White it prowls Routes 5, 9 and 16 and the Dreamyard.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Limber and Unburden, with Prankster hidden. It has Fake Out, Sucker Punch, Nasty Plot, Night Slash and Play Rough to work with. With base Speed 106 and 88 in both Attack and Special Attack, it is a fast, fairly light hitter.

### Name origin

Liepard may combine 'lie' and 'leopard'. The Japanese name is Lepardas (レパルダス), which may come from 'leopard' plus the Ancient Greek leopardós or Latin leopardus.

### Design inspiration

Liepard shows traits of housecats and leopards, and could also draw on spotted wildcats such as the ocelot and serval. Bulbapedia adds a faint likeness to a black leopard, given its dark colouring and light spotting. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Liepard evolves from Purrloin at level 20.

### In the games

Liepard first showed up as a wild Pokémon in Black and White and is wild again in Sword and Shield. It is not in Scarlet and Violet, and in Legends: Z-A wild ones appear only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Stephan's Liepard debuted in 'Lost at the League!' and lost to Ash's Krookodile in the next episode. Team Flare scientist Bryony's Liepard fought Ash's Pikachu and Greninja in 'Meeting at Terminus Cave!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that no other Pokémon shares its base stat total of 446.
- Among Generation V Dark types, its base Speed of 106 is the highest.
- Its anime debut was planned for the 23rd and 24th episodes of the Best Wishes series, but those episodes were postponed indefinitely after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
- It shares its Cruel Pokémon category with Galarian Articuno.
