Water Weed Pokémon · Water/Grass-type

![Lotad official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/270.webp)

Lotad is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Water Weed Pokémon, number 270 (#0270) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 2.6 kg.

Lotad is the Water Weed Pokémon, a tiny Water and Grass type with a lily pad on its head that ferries Pokémon that cannot swim across the water. The leaf repels dirt, so it stays clean even after carrying mud-covered passengers.

## How to pronounce Lotad

Lotad is pronounced **LOH-tad**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Lotad is a small plant Pokémon, blue in colour, with six stubby legs, large eyes and a wide yellow bill-like mouth. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 2.6 kg. The Pokédex says the leaf on its head grew so large and heavy that Lotad gave up living on land, and that the leaf wilts if Lotad goes too long without drinking.

### Behaviour

Lotad gather on lakes in great numbers, sometimes covering the surface with their leaves. A Lotad ferries small Pokémon across ponds on its leaf, and on rare occasions it travels over land in search of clean water.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Water's Edge: ponds and lakes with clean water.

### Powers

Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain and Rain Dish restores HP in rain, so Rain Dance, learned at level 33 in Scarlet and Violet, suits it; Own Tempo is hidden. It also learns Absorb, Mega Drain, Bubble Beam, Giga Drain and Energy Ball. With a 220 base total it is a stepping stone to Ludicolo.

### Name origin

Lotad may combine 'lotus' and 'lily pad' with 'tad' or 'tadpole'. The Japanese name is Hassboh (ハスボー), possibly from hasu ('lotus') and akanbō ('baby') or bōshi ('hat').

### Design inspiration

Lotad appears to combine a lily pad with the kappa, a Japanese water yōkai that carries a dish of water on its head and has a turtle-style beak. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Lotad evolves into Lombre at level 14, and Lombre becomes Ludicolo with a Water Stone.

### In the games

In Scarlet and Violet Lotad is wild around Kitakami in The Teal Mask, including 2 star Tera Raid Battles. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, where Bulbapedia says it is exclusive to Sapphire. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A, and it has a Pokédex entry in Pokémon Pokopia.

### In the anime

Brock got his Lotad in 'The Lotad Lowdown', from three sisters who ran a flower shop and kept a horde of them; it was slow and sometimes stared blankly before attacking.

### Fun facts

- Lotad, Lombre and Ludicolo are the only Pokémon with Rain Dish as a regular Ability rather than a Hidden one, in the game data.
- Their Water 1 and Grass Egg Group pairing is unique too: no other species has both, and no other Water type breeds in the Grass group or Grass type in the Water 1 group.
- Lotad is a twin of Seedot: both are Grass types with a 220 base total, and Bulbapedia says each was a Ruby or Sapphire exclusive found in the same places.
