It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 55 kg.

Ludicolo, the Carefree Pokémon, is a Water and Grass type that bursts into dance whenever it hears festive music. The Pokédex says the cheerful rhythm makes it stronger.

## Lore

### Biology

Ludicolo is a plant Pokémon that walks on two legs, with a sombrero-like lily pad on its head, an orange bill and shaggy yellow fur with zigzagging brown stripes. Bulbapedia says it looks like a mix of pineapple and duck. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 55 kg, and females have thinner stripes than males.

### Behaviour

Ludicolo cannot resist a good beat. The Pokédex says structures in its body produce energy when hit by cheerful sound waves, so upbeat music makes it dance, and it then faces any foe without fear. The Ruby Pokédex says it appears when it hears children singing on hiking trips.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Water's Edge, though Bulbapedia says stone evolution makes it rare in the wild.

### Powers

Swift Swim and Rain Dish suit rain teams, with Own Tempo hidden, and Ludicolo gets Hydro Pump, Giga Drain, Leaf Storm and Focus Blast by TM. With 90 base Special Attack and 100 Special Defense it is a bulky special attacker.

### Name origin

Ludicolo may combine 'ludic' (playful), 'ludicrous' and 'paludicolous' (marsh-dwelling), and may hide an anagram of Spanish 'loco' ('crazy'). The Japanese name is Runpappa (ルンパッパ), possibly from runrun ('bouncy') or 'rumba' plus kappa or papaya.

### Design inspiration

Ludicolo appears to combine a lily pad with the enko, a hairy kind of kappa, though its beak is closer to a duck's. Its colours and shape recall a pineapple or papaya, and its sombrero head, poncho-like fur and dancing recall a Mexican folk dancer. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Ludicolo is reached by giving Lombre a Water Stone, with no level requirement.

### In the games

In The Teal Mask, Lombre can evolve into Ludicolo, and it appears in 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles around Kitakami. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Brock's Lombre became a Ludicolo in 'Once in a Mawile' after touching Samantha's Water Stone. Poncho's Ludicolo battled Ash twice in 'Go Go Ludicolo!', defeating his Corphish.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia counts 'Gotta Dance!', an episode of Pokémon Chronicles, as Ludicolo's debut, ahead of its main-series debut in 'Go Go Ludicolo!'.
- Ludicolo mirrors Shiftry: both finish with a 480 base total and 90 Special Attack, both need an Evolution stone, and one is based on a kappa and the other on a tengu.
- Bulbapedia notes that Ludicolo is among the few species with gender differences whose official artwork shows the female.
