![Lunala official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/792.webp)

Lunala is a [Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)/[Ghost](https://pokee.si/types/ghost)-type Pokémon, the Moone Pokémon, number 792 (#0792) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 4 m tall and weighs 120 kg.

Lunala is the Moone Pokémon, a skeletal winged beast that old writings call the beast that calls the moon. It is the Legendary of Pokémon Moon, and the Pokédex says it drains the light around it and then turns into the full moon.

## How to pronounce Lunala

Lunala is pronounced **loo-NAH-luh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Lunala looks like a legless, skeletal bat with a crescent-shaped hood, a ribcage torso and a deep blue patch across its upper head showing an ever-changing starscape. It is 4.0 m (13'1") tall and weighs 120.0 kg (264.6 lbs). In its Full Moon phase a light red third eye opens on its forehead, its wings glow bright light blue and spread so their golden parts form a circle.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says Lunala takes in any and all light and converts it into its own energy, covering the brightness of day with a moonless night. It can also call unknown powers and life-forms to our world through openings to other worlds. Bulbapedia says it is a being of light that Necrozma constantly hunts, and that it is fond of the Lunala Treats that Snacksworth makes.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in another world. In Moon it waits at the Altar of the Moone and in Ultra Moon at Mahalo Trail. In Scarlet and Violet it needs a transfer or a trade, and in The Indigo Disk you can meet it at Casseroya Lake after Snacksworth gives you a Lunala Treat. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability Shadow Shield halves regular damage while it has full HP. Its signature move Moongeist Beam ignores Abilities, and Bulbapedia says only Lunala and Dawn Wings Necrozma can learn it or use the Z-Move Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom. It also learns Moonlight, Night Daze, Phantom Force and Dream Eater. With 137 base HP and 137 Special Attack it is a bulky special attacker.

### Name origin

Lunala may join Latin luna, 'moon', and ala, 'wing', and possibly lunula, a word for something crescent-shaped. The Japanese name is Lunala (ルナアーラ).

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Lunala appears to be a bat with a moon motif, and its onomatopoeia in Moon, Mahina-pea, may blend the words for moon and bat. It may also echo bat gods and goddesses from Aztec, Mayan, Samoan and Hawaiian myth. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Lunala evolves from Cosmoem. The Sun Pokédex entry passes on a rumour that it is the female form of Cosmog's evolution.

### In the games

Lunala is the box Legendary of Moon, with Solgaleo its counterpart in Sun; both debuted in Sun and Moon. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Necrozma can take it over to become Dawn Wings Necrozma, and in Shield with the Expansion Pass it is a Max Lair Pokémon.

### In the anime

Appeared in Ash's dream in 'A Dream Encounter!', where it and Solgaleo appear as the creators of Nebby. In 'Filling the Light with Darkness!' it and Nebby tried to escape Necrozma through an Ultra Wormhole.

### Fun facts

- Evolving from Cosmoem, Lunala loses 879.9 kg, the most weight any Pokémon loses on evolution.
- Its base stat total of 680 is shared with Giratina, Dawn Wings Necrozma and Shadow Rider Calyrex, the highest of any Ghost type, according to Bulbapedia.
- A trademark document spelled its romanisation 'Lunaala', with two As before the L, which hints at an earlier naming.
- In Pokémon Journeys, Lunala has the very same cry as Zapdos, as heard in 'A Crackling Raid Battle!'.
