Superpower Pokémon · Fighting-type

![Machop official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/66.webp)

Machop is a [Fighting](https://pokee.si/types/fighting)-type Pokémon, the Superpower Pokémon, number 66 (#0066) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 19.5 kg.

Machop is the Superpower Pokémon, a child-sized Fighting type that is already strong enough to throw a hundred grown-ups. It trains non-stop, and its favourite weights are boulders and the occasional Graveler.

## How to pronounce Machop

Machop is pronounced **muh-CHOP**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Machop is a 0.8 m, 19.5 kg humanoid with blue-grey skin, large red eyes, a flat face, three brown ridges on its head and a short stubby tail. Its whole body is muscle, and the Pokédex says those muscles never cramp or get sore, however hard it exercises.

### Behaviour

Machop never stops working out. It practises all kinds of martial arts, lifts rocks in the mountains and hefts a Graveler like a barbell. Some Machop travel the world to master every fighting style, and the Pokédex says one that has built up enough confidence and muscle challenges Makuhita to a fight.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it in the mountains, away from people. In the first games it is found in Kanto's Rock Tunnel and Victory Road.

### Diet

Its instincts steer it towards highly nutritious food that helps it build muscle efficiently.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Guts, which boosts Attack when it has a status condition, and No Guard, which makes every move used by or against it hit; Steadfast, which raises its Speed when it flinches, is hidden. It learns Low Kick, Revenge and Knock Off early, and Dynamic Punch later. Its base Attack is 80, but its Speed is just 35.

### Name origin

Machop blends 'macho' (Spanish and Portuguese for 'male') with 'chop'. The Japanese name is Wanriky (ワンリキー), from wan ('arm') and riki ('strength'), echoing wanryoku ('physical strength').

### Design inspiration

Machop seems modelled on a bodybuilder, with a few reptilian touches in its face, head crests, tail and blue-grey colouring.

### Evolution notes

Machop evolves into Machoke at level 28, and Machoke becomes Machamp by trade, or with a Linking Cord in newer games.

### In the games

A Generation I original, Machop cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it roams Wild Zones 8 and 12, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Brawly's Machop beat Taillow but lost to Ash's Treecko in 'Brave the Wave'. In 'Pop Goes The Sneasel', a wild Machop watches over Ho-Oh's flame at a shrine.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Wanriky is the last Pokémon name when Japanese names are sorted in gojūon order, the Japanese equivalent of alphabetical order.
- In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, and their remakes, a girl in Oreburgh City trades her Abra for a Machop, according to Bulbapedia.
- Timburr is Machop's twin on paper: both are pure Fighting types with Guts, a 3:1 male-to-female ratio, a base stat total of 305 and a final evolution that needs a trade.

## Pokédex entries

Though as small as a child, it has strength enough to easily throw a well-built adult. Striving to become ever stronger, Machop trains by carrying a Graveler on its shoulders. *(Legends: Arceus)*

Always brimming with power, it passes time by lifting boulders. Doing so makes it even stronger. *(Gold, HeartGold, Shield)*

Its whole body is composed of muscles. Even though it's the size of a human child, it can hurl 100 grown-ups. *(FireRed, Y, Sword)*

Very powerful in spite of its small size. Its mastery of many types of martial arts makes it very tough. *(Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)*

It likes food that's highly nutritious because its instincts drive it to build muscle efficiently. *(Ultra Moon)*

Once this Pokémon has gained enough confidence and muscle from training with its friends, it challenges Makuhita to a battle. *(Ultra Sun)*
