# Magearna

Artificial Pokémon · Steel/Fairy-type

Magearna is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Artificial Pokémon, number 801 (#0801) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 80.5 kg.

Magearna is the Artificial Pokémon, a silver machine built about 500 years ago whose real self is the Soul-Heart, an artificial soul glowing in its chest. It can sense how others feel, which makes it good at looking after people.

## Lore

### Biology

Magearna is 1.0 m tall and weighs 80.5 kg. Its silver body is built from round parts, with a gear around its head, rabbit-like ears and a lower body shaped like a ball gown. The Pokédex says the body is merely a vessel and the Soul-Heart is the true life-form. Bulbapedia says the Soul-Heart is a blue-and-pink glowing heart in its chest, made from the collected life energy of other Pokémon.

### Behaviour

Sun's entry says it can understand human speech but cannot speak itself. It links its mind with the people and Pokémon around it to sense how they feel, which the Ultra Sun entry says makes it useful for looking after people. Bulbapedia says it curls up when it is dormant or sad.

### Habitat

As a built Pokémon, Magearna has no natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it comes through Pokémon HOME or an event.

### Powers

Its Ability, Soul-Heart, raises Special Attack each time any Pokémon faints. Its signature move is Fleur Cannon (level 90), which only Magearna can learn, alongside Flash Cannon, Aura Sphere, Shift Gear and Iron Head. Original Color Magearna wears the red and gold paint it had when it was built, and the difference is purely cosmetic; the Z-A Pokédex says that finish delighted the king's daughter it was made for. In the Mega Dimension DLC both forms can Mega Evolve with Magearnite into Mega Magearna, whose colours are restored and whose 170 base Special Attack is the highest of any Fairy type, according to Bulbapedia. The Pokédex says the Mega Stone triggers a hidden mechanism that removes its limits while its feelings hide away.

### Name origin

Magearna may blend the Latin machina, meaning machine, with 'mana' and 'gear'. The Japanese name is Magearna (マギアナ).

### Design inspiration

Masafumi Nukita created the concept for Magearna and wrote its Pokédex entries, while Bulbapedia says its designer is not known. It may be based on a nursemaid, with the gear like a maid's headdress and the body like a maid's outfit, and perhaps on a karakuri puppet. Its rabbit-like ears may reference the moon rabbit legend. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Magearna reached Sun and Moon players by scanning a QR code in Hau'oli City. In the Mega Dimension DLC of Legends: Z-A you can find it at Quasartico Inc. during a side mission and Mega Evolve it with Magearnite.

### In the anime

Magearna debuted in the film 'Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel', where it was kidnapped and its guardian Volcanion set out to rescue it. In the Sun and Moon series, a Shiny Magearna sat inactive in Lillie's family mansion in 'The Secret Princess!'.

### Fun facts

- It was the first Generation VII Pokémon the public saw, revealed on 14 February 2016 after a leak in CoroCoro four days earlier.
- Its QR-code gift had no end date, making Magearna the first Mythical Pokémon in the core series given out through an indefinitely active event.
- Original Color Magearna could not be obtained legitimately until Pokémon HOME launched on 12 February 2020, when filling the National Pokédex as far as Eternatus, Mythicals included, earned one as a Mystery Gift.
- Only Magearna and Tatsugiri look different when Mega Evolved depending on which form they started in.
