Mantine is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Kite Pokémon, number 226 (#0226) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 2.1 m tall and weighs 220 kg.

Mantine is the Kite Pokémon, a Water and Flying type that swims in schools, races its neighbours and launches itself out of the sea to glide over the waves. Observers often mistook it for a bird, and it carries a Remoraid on its fin.

## Lore

### Biology

Mantine is a large manta-ray Pokémon, 2.1 m long and 220 kg, with a dark blue back, a pinkish grey underside and a coarse, rough skin. Its wide fins are wing-like and marked with black rings, and two long horn-like growths sit on its head. The Pokédex says that if it builds up enough speed it can fly more than 100 m (300 ft) out of the water.

### Behaviour

Mantine is docile and usually travels in schools, which Bulbapedia says like to race each other. It ignores any Remoraid that clings to its fins to scavenge its leftovers, and Bulbapedia adds that the two fight together if attacked. In Alola, the Ultra Moon Pokédex says, many people took up surfing out of admiration for how gracefully it swims.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it in open seas. In Sword and Shield it is found on Route 9, in the Lake of Outrage and around the Wild Area lakes.

### Diet

A Crystal Pokédex entry says it swims along eating whatever swims into its mouth.

### Powers

Mantine's Abilities are Swift Swim and Water Absorb, with Water Veil hidden. It attacks with Wing Attack, Water Pulse and Bubble Beam, and the Dual Wingbeat tutor move is open to it in Sword and Shield. With 140 base Special Defense it is a very tough special wall, though its base Attack is only 40.

### Name origin

Mantine may blend 'manta' with 'marine', 'brine' or 'tine'. The Japanese name is Mantain (マンタイン).

### Design inspiration

Its leaping looks like a manta ray, and Bulbapedia names the Mobula genus, the 'flying rays'. With Remoraid based on a firearm, Mantine may also nod to a fighter plane, whose roundel insignia would match the rings on its body. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

It evolves from Mantyke when it levels up while a Remoraid is in your party.

### In the games

Mantine first appeared in Gold and Silver. It returns in Legends: Arceus and Sword and Shield, but is unobtainable in both Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Mantine first appeared in 'Spell of the Unown: Entei', and its animated series debut was 'Mantine Overboard!'. In 'Where Are You Going, Eevee?' a Mantine rescues Eevee and later the two try Mantine Surfing together.

### Fun facts

- Before Generation VII its base HP was 65; it now stands at 85.
- An early build shown at Spaceworld '97 seems to have had Mantine as a different design called Hanei.
- No core game sprite has shown a Remoraid on Mantine since Generation IV; Bulbapedia guesses this avoids a continuity error.
- Of the Pokémon introduced in Generation II, game data ranks it as the heaviest Water type and the heaviest Flying type, at 220 kg.

As it majestically swims, it doesn't care if Remoraid attach to it to scavenge for its leftovers. *(LeafGreen, Shield)*

If it builds up enough speed swimming, it can jump out above the waves and glide for over 300 feet. *(Sword)*

Many people have taken up surfing because they admire how magnificently Mantine swims. *(Ultra Moon)*

Postcards and posters featuring Mantine leaping elegantly above the waves are popular souvenirs of Alola. *(Ultra Sun)*

On sunny days, schools of Mantine can be seen elegantly leaping over the sea's waves. This Pokémon is not bothered by the Remoraid that hitches rides. *(Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)*
