Wool Pokémon · Electric-type

![Mareep official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/179.webp)

Mareep is a [Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the Wool Pokémon, number 179 (#0179) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 7.8 kg.

Mareep is the Wool Pokémon, a sheep whose fleece builds up static electricity until the bulb on its tail glows. It is very tempting to pet, but touch it with a bare hand and the Pokédex promises a painful shock.

## How to pronounce Mareep

Mareep is pronounced **muh-REEP**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Mareep is 0.6 m tall and weighs 7.8 kg, with cream-coloured wool, a blue head and a yellow-and-black striped tail. An orange sphere on the tail tip works like a small bulb and glows brighter as the charge grows. The Pokédex says the wool rubs together to make static and swells to double its size when charged. The fleece grows back within a week of its summer shedding, and air trapped in its fur keeps it comfortable through hot summers and cold winters.

### Behaviour

Mareep has a mild disposition and usually shies away from wild battles, says Bulbapedia. Clothes made from its fleece pick up static easily, so they need special treatment. Bulbapedia adds that Pokémon Sleep shows Mareep rolling over as it sleeps.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists grassland, and Bulbapedia adds farms. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province, and in Legends: Z-A in Vert District's Wild Zone 1.

### Powers

Its Ability Static gives attackers that touch it a 30% chance of paralysis, and its hidden Ability is Plus. It learns Thunder Wave and Thunder Shock early, then Electro Ball, Power Gem, Discharge and Cotton Guard. Its best base stats are HP 55 and Special Attack 65.

### Name origin

Mareep may combine 'Mary' from the nursery rhyme with 'sheep', and its letters are an anagram of 'ampere', the unit of electric current. The Japanese name is Merriep (メリープ), possibly from mē, a sheep's bleat, or 'merry'.

### Design inspiration

Mareep is based on a sheep. Its pale yellow wool might nod to the Golden Fleece of Greek myth, and wool's static charge likely explains the Electric type. Bulbapedia says the line may also echo the novel title Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Mareep evolves into Flaaffy at level 15.

### In the games

Players have met Mareep since Gold and Silver. In Scarlet and Violet it can also turn up in 2-star Tera Raid Battles, and Legends: Z-A gives it number 24 in the Lumiose Pokédex.

### In the anime

Mareep debuted in 'Mild 'n Wooly', where a girl named Mary and her mother shepherded a flock that included a special Mareep called Fluffy. In 'The Light of Floccesy Ranch!', Ellie looks after ten Mareep that live on Floccesy Ranch.

### Fun facts

- At 35, Mareep has the lowest base Speed of any Electric type introduced in Generation II.
- In 'Hassle in the Castle', Dr. Anna uses the electricity from her Mareep to power a low-voltage machine that stimulates muscles.
- In the Spaceworld '97 demo, Mareep appears to have been a pink Pokémon called Pachimē, with a more pear-shaped orb on its tail.

It stores lots of air in its soft fur, allowing it to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. *(Crystal, Y)*

Its fluffy coat swells to double when static electricity builds up. Touching it can be shocking. *(Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White, X)*

When cold weather increases static electricity, its wool doubles in size and the tip of its tail glows slightly. *(Black 2, White 2)*
