## Lore

### Biology

Marshadow is 0.7 m tall and weighs 22.2 kg. It looks like a humanoid made of smoky grey shadow, with a helmet-like head topped by curled horns, orange-red eyes and a collar of smoke. Bulbapedia says it can sink into shadows to avoid being noticed.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex calls it craven and cowering, and says it hides in shadows and never shows itself to humans, so for a long time it was only a legend. Tucked into someone's shadow it can sense their feelings and copy their abilities, and one entry says it picked up ultimate techniques by copying a martial arts master.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it in the shadows cast by people and Pokémon. In Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC it appears in Rouge Sector 1, and it is not available in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Its Ability is Technician, which strengthens moves of 60 base power or less. Its signature move is Spectral Thief (level 72), which only Marshadow learns and which steals the target's stat boosts before striking, and it also has an exclusive Z-Move, Soul-Stealing 7-Star Strike. Copycat and Role Play suit its mimicry, while Shadow Sneak, Shadow Punch and Close Combat suit its Fighting and Ghost types. Bulbapedia says that when it is angry or attacking, its fighting spirit burns and it becomes Zenith Marshadow, with headgear, wrist bumps and collar flaring like green and yellow flames. With 125 base Attack and 125 Speed it is a fast, hard-hitting attacker.

### Name origin

Marshadow may combine 'martial arts', 'nightmarcher' and 'shadow'. The Japanese name is Marshadow (マーシャドー).

### Design inspiration

Marshadow may be based on shadowboxing, and Bulbapedia notes similarities to the nightmarchers and menehune of Hawaiian mythology. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Marshadow is an event Mythical Pokémon, handed out from 2017 onwards and first seen in Sun and Moon. In Legends: Z-A it is a Mega Dimension side-mission find in Rouge Sector 1.

### In the anime

Marshadow had a major role in the film 'I Choose You!', guiding those chosen by Ho-Oh and following Ash around in his shadow after he received a Rainbow Wing. In the Sun and Moon series it debuted in 'The Dex Can't Help It!', where Rotom could not record it because it was not in the Pokédex.

### Fun facts

- Its Japanese name leaked on 5 April 2016 through a trademark filing, just over a year before its official reveal on 7 April 2017.
- In the original Sun and Moon it sits at the very end of the Alola Pokédex, which Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon later extended.
- Scarlet and Violet's data flags Shiinotic, not Marshadow, as a Mythical Pokémon, probably a typo between their internal names; neither is in those games, so nothing changes.
