Eyeball Pokémon · Bug/Flying-type

![Masquerain official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/284.webp)

Masquerain is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Eyeball Pokémon, number 284 (#0284) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 3.6 kg.

Masquerain is the Eyeball Pokémon, a Bug and Flying type whose antennae carry big patterns that look like angry eyes. According to the Pokédex, when those eyes droop and look sad, heavy rain is supposedly on its way.

## How to pronounce Masquerain

Masquerain is pronounced **MAS-ker-ayn**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Masquerain is a light blue insectoid with a pink face, round black eyes and two pairs of translucent, rhombus-shaped wings. The 'eyes' are patterns on its large white and pink antennae, which Bulbapedia describes as having pale lashes and a dark pink pupil. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 3.6 kg. The Pokédex says its four wings let it hover and move every which way, backwards and sideways included, like a helicopter.

### Behaviour

Masquerain scares enemies with its eyelike patterns and, if that fails, flees on its wings. It hates getting wet: rain makes its antennae heavy and grounds it, so it shelters under large trees and eaves or in tree hollows, then faces the sun to dry off.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia files it with the water's-edge Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province (Areas One and Five) and in Kitakami's Wilds, Mossfell Confluence and Oni Mountain.

### Powers

Its Ability Intimidate lowers an opposing Pokémon's Attack when it enters battle, and the hidden Unnerve stops opponents eating held Berries. It strikes with Air Slash and Bug Buzz, can blow foes away with Whirlwind and learns Quiver Dance at level 52. With base Special Attack 100 and Speed 80 it is a quick special attacker.

### Name origin

Masquerain may combine 'masquerade' (a disguise) with 'rain'. The Japanese name is Amemoth (アメモース), which may combine ame (rain) or amenbo (water strider) with 'moth'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Masquerain as a mix of semi-aquatic insects: it skates like a water strider, flies like a dragonfly, and its leg-like wings recall crane flies of the genus Bittacomorpha. Its Japanese name may also hint at semi-aquatic Acentropinae moths. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Masquerain evolves from Surskit at level 22 and has no further evolution.

### In the games

Players meet Masquerain in Ruby and Sapphire, where it debuted as the evolution of Surskit. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Drew's Masquerain debuted in 'A Fan with a Plan', training for the Rubello Town Contest. In 'Dewpider Ascending!', a Surskit evolved into Masquerain mid-battle against a Dewpider over territory and, pleased with its new form, flew off and left the pond to its rival.

### Fun facts

- Masquerain gained 40 points of base stat total in Generation VII, which Bulbapedia says is the largest increase any Pokémon received that generation.
- In the manga Pokémon Adventures, Masquerain first appears as Winona's Pokémon in a chapter called 'Master Class with Masquerain'.
- Guzma, the Team Skull boss, owns a Masquerain in Pokémon Adventures.
