# Mawile

Deceiver Pokémon · Steel/Fairy-type

![Mawile official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/303.webp)

Mawile is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Deceiver Pokémon, number 303 (#0303) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 11.5 kg.

Mawile is the Deceiver Pokémon, a Steel and Fairy type with an innocent face and a second, giant mouth on the back of its head. The jaws are really transformed steel horns, and the Pokédex says the cute face is there to make foes drop their guard before they get swallowed whole.

## How to pronounce Mawile

Mawile is pronounced **MAW-ile**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Mawile said out loud:

[Listen](https://pokee.si/audio/names/303.mp3)

In Japanese it is クチート (Kucheat).

## Lore

### Biology

Mawile is a short, pale-yellow biped, 0.6 m tall and 11.5 kg, with red eyes and long black ear-like extensions. Its huge black jaws sit behind its head and hold ten metallic teeth. The Pokédex says they cannot taste anything, so Mawile uses them to eat food it dislikes, and that they can bite through an iron beam.

### Behaviour

Mawile relies on a gentle face and cute gestures to make foes careless, and only then turns its relentless jaws on them. Bulbapedia says it usually keeps its back to the enemy in battle so the jaws can do their work.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists Mawile as a cave Pokémon. It cannot be obtained in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zones 9 and 17 and in several Lumiose districts, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Mawile has Hyper Cutter and Intimidate, with Sheer Force hidden. It bites with Play Rough, Iron Head, Crunch and Sucker Punch, defends with Iron Defense and Stockpile, and can pass boosts on with Baton Pass. Using Mawilite it Mega Evolves, growing a second set of jaws that the Pokédex says thrash about as if each had a will of its own, and gaining Huge Power, with base Attack 105 and Defense 125. Both forms are tough, but base Speed is only 50.

### Name origin

Mawile may combine 'maw' (the jaws of a voracious animal) with 'wile' (a cunning trick) or 'smile'. The Japanese name is Kucheat (クチート), which may blend kuchi ('mouth') with 'cheat' or 'eat'.

### Design inspiration

Mawile may be based on the futakuchi-onna, a woman from Japanese folklore with a second mouth on the back of her head, often shown eating mochi. Huge Power's Japanese name, chikaramochi, is a pun that can mean either 'muscleman' or 'strengthening mochi'. The jaws also look like a bear trap, which may explain the Steel typing. These are fan readings.

### In the games

In Super Mystery Dungeon, Mawile is the Expedition Society's archaeologist, and her work is the study of the world's history. It first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire, where it was exclusive to Ruby, and was a pure Steel type before Generation VI.

### In the anime

Samantha's Mawile debuted in 'Once in a Mawile' and had a crush on Brock's Lombre, which did not last once Lombre evolved. In 'The Bonds of Mega Evolution!', Mabel's Mega Mawile easily beat Korrina's Mega Lucario, which could not control itself.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Pokémon Musicals shows Mawile from behind, since its back is the side it presents to opponents in battle.
- Legends: Z-A has no Abilities, so Mega Mawile loses Huge Power and gets 42 extra base Attack instead; Bulbapedia says its overall rise of 142 base stat points is the largest of any Mega Evolution.
- In Pokémon Sleep it has four sleep styles, one of which is hugging its own jaws.
