![Melmetal official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/809.webp)

Melmetal is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Hex Nut Pokémon, number 809 (#0809) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 2.5 m tall and weighs 800 kg.

Melmetal is the Hex Nut Pokémon, a hulking Steel giant of liquid metal whose punches are said to be the hardest of any Pokémon. People once worshipped it for making iron from nothing, and the Pokédex says it returned to life after 3,000 years.

## How to pronounce Melmetal

Melmetal is pronounced **mel-MET-ul**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Melmetal is a silver, roughly humanoid Pokémon 2.5 m tall and 800 kg. Dark grey hex nuts sit around its shoulders, arms, hands and feet, a large golden nut circles its neck and a smaller one forms its head, with a red wire-like tail behind. Evolution hardened its body, but Bulbapedia says it is still liquid inside and flexible, especially in its heavy arms. The Pokédex says it will rust and fall apart at the end of its life, and the leftover shards will in time become Meltan.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia, citing Professor Willow's account, says ancient people used the metal Melmetal shed to make unique tools. After one died long ago, its followers stored the Meltan that formed from it in Mystery Boxes, hoping Melmetal could return one day.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lived in a secluded wooded land full of sedimentary rock rich in magnetite, and lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Its only Ability is Iron Fist, which strengthens punching moves. Centrifugal force from its heavy arms is behind its punches, and Bulbapedia notes the nuts around its arms slide down towards its hands, bulking up the fists. Double Iron Bash is a move only Melmetal can learn, alongside Thunder Punch, Dynamic Punch and Superpower. Gigantamax Melmetal is a cyclops-like giant over 25 m (82 ft) tall that can stretch its body to punch from a distance and fire electric beams from its belly; only it can use G-Max Meltdown. With 135 HP and 143 Attack and Defense it is a huge bruiser, held back by a base Speed of 34.

### Name origin

Melmetal may combine 'melt' and 'metal'. The Japanese name is Melmetal (メルメタル).

### Design inspiration

Melmetal repeats Meltan's hex-nut look and may draw on gallium or mercury too. Bulbapedia suggests Melmetal and its Gigantamax form may be based on the Cyclops, and that Gigantamax Melmetal may also borrow from Balor, a giant whose single eye destroys everything when opened. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Melmetal evolves from Meltan, but only in Pokémon GO, so the main games hand it over fully evolved.

### In the games

Melmetal reached the main series in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, through a transfer from GO to GO Park. A Gigantamax-capable Melmetal comes to Sword and Shield through Pokémon HOME after a transfer from GO. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in the same side mission as Meltan.

### In the anime

Melmetal debuted in 'Final Rivals!', after Ash's Meltan fused with its fellow Meltan and evolved on the eve of the Manalo Conference finals.

### Fun facts

- Melmetal is coded to learn Thunder Punch on evolving, but since Meltan cannot evolve in the main games, that move can never trigger.
- Bulbapedia says Melmetal is the one Pokémon whose Gigantamax form the Master Dojo cannot provide.
- Bulbapedia notes that Melmetal's Shiny form is legitimately available but its Shiny Gigantamax form is not, because the Gigantamax Melmetal handed out through Pokémon HOME is not Shiny, which makes it the only Pokémon with that quirk.
- Of all Mythical Pokémon, Bulbapedia says, only Melmetal picks up Protect by levelling up.
- Bulbapedia notes that, alone among Gigantamax forms, Gigantamax Melmetal is not listed as discovered in Galar on the official Japanese Pokédex website.
