![Meloetta official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/648.webp)

Meloetta is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Melody Pokémon, number 648 (#0648) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 6.5 kg.

Meloetta is the Melody Pokémon, a singing Mythical whose songs can make listeners, human or Pokémon, happy or sad. Its design is built from musical notation, and in battle it swaps its singing voice for a dancer's moves.

## How to pronounce Meloetta

## Lore

### Biology

Meloetta is a small, graceful Pokémon, 0.6 m tall and 6.5 kg, whose body is full of music symbols: staff lines run through its hair, its arms and hands are quarter notes, its pupil-less eyes echo whole notes, and a black headpiece shaped like a treble clef doubles as a microphone. Meloetta has no gender.

### Behaviour

Meloetta is a performer. The Pokédex says it sings with a special vocal technique that controls the feelings of listeners, and its melodies can make Pokémon happy or sad. It also dances, and its Legends: Z-A entry says its dance steps captivate everyone now that it has recovered a long-forgotten song. Bulbapedia adds that artists in Unova were inspired by its music and dancing, and that it can lose its song if the world fills with sorrow.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives it no habitat; Bulbapedia says the anime's Abyssal Ruins is its old home. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by HOME or, in the DLC The Indigo Disk, in the Coastal Biome. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose after a special scan.

### Powers

Its Ability Serene Grace doubles the chance of its moves' extra effects. Its signature move is Relic Song, which Bulbapedia says only Meloetta is known to learn; it comes at level 50 in Scarlet and Violet. Using Relic Song in battle switches Meloetta between Aria Forme (Normal and Psychic, with 128 Special Attack and Special Defense) and Pirouette Forme (Normal and Fighting, with 128 Attack and Speed). It returns to Aria Forme when withdrawn or when the battle ends. Hyper Voice, Psychic and Close Combat suit the two forms.

### Name origin

Meloetta may combine 'melody', 'pirouette', 'operetta' and 'arietta', plus the Italian diminutive ending -etta. The Japanese name is Meloetta (メロエッタ). Its two Formes are named for a solo vocal piece, the aria, and a whirling ballet turn, the pirouette.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests Meloetta may be a muse, the Greek goddess who inspires artists. The Aria Forme resembles a pop singer with a headset microphone, and the Pirouette Forme a ballerina in a tutu, perhaps with a hint of flamenco. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Meloetta reached the Generation V games by event, and a guitarist in those games teaches it Relic Song. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Arceus.

### In the anime

Meloetta debuted in 'An Epic Defense Force!', then began following Ash and his friends in 'All for the Love of Meloetta!'. It revealed itself in 'Piplup, Pansage, and a Meeting of the Times!', and Team Rocket targeted it for Operation Tempest because of its link to the Abyssal Ruins.

### Fun facts

- Meloetta first leaked on a poster for the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice on 26 February 2012, and Oha Suta officially revealed it on 1 March 2012.
- Bulbapedia says Pirouette Forme alone gives this mix of effort points: one each of Attack, Defense and Speed.
- The guitarist who teaches Relic Song says Meloetta lost its red shoes when sorrow darkened the world, which Bulbapedia thinks may nod to the Hans Christian Andersen tale The Red Shoes.
- In Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, it only unlocks as a Poké Ball summon after at least 8 hours of play.
