Meltan is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Hex Nut Pokémon, number 808 (#0808) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 8 kg.

Meltan is the Hex Nut Pokémon, a tiny blob of molten steel that eats metal for energy. It arrived as a surprise Mythical through Pokémon GO, and it is the only Mythical that can evolve, though only inside GO.

## How to pronounce Meltan

Meltan is pronounced **MEL-tan**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Meltan is 0.2 m tall and 8 kg, with a body of silver liquid metal topped by a golden hexagonal nut that serves as its head. A small black sphere floating inside the nut is its eye, and its red tail looks like an electrical wire. Bulbapedia says official concept art makes the liquid gallium, and its arms can stretch longer or shorter.

### Behaviour

Meltan lives in groups, and the Pokédex says that eventually its strongest member swallows up the others and evolves. Bulbapedia says it spins its head to call others of its kind, and also as a sign of affection. In the anime it multiplies over time and can be tamed with metal-like treats.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. Bulbapedia notes that ancient texts mention it where the Mystery Box was found, and lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

### Diet

Meltan dissolves and eats metal. The Pokédex says it breaks down bits of iron and other metals found underground and takes them into its molten steel body.

### Powers

Its only Ability is Magnet Pull, which stops Steel-type opponents from fleeing or switching out. The metal circulating through its body generates the electricity it fires from its eye, which fits its moves Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave and Flash Cannon, plus Headbutt. With 65 Attack and Defense but a total of only 300, it is more curiosity than fighter.

### Name origin

Meltan may combine 'melt', 'metal' and the Japanese diminutive -tan, and could also echo 'molten'. The Japanese name is Meltan (メルタン).

### Design inspiration

Meltan's head is a hexagonal nut, and its tail looks like an exposed wire. Bulbapedia says its lower body draws on gallium, a metal that melts at about 30°C (86°F), and may also recall mercury. Junichi Masuda has said a Game Freak staff member who grew up with the original games designed it, to build a bridge between GO players and main-series players.

### Evolution notes

In Pokémon GO, Meltan evolves into Melmetal when fed 400 Meltan Candy. It cannot evolve in the main-series games.

### In the games

Meltan reached the main series in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, by transferring a Pokémon from GO to GO Park, and Sword and Shield receive it through Pokémon HOME. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC's Rouge Sector 1, during a side mission called 'Dreams of Meltan'.

### In the anime

In 'Show Me the Metal!' Ash met a Meltan that came to Melemele Island with others of its kind, and he caught it in 'Got Meltan?' after Rowlet helped it get its hex nut head back. More Meltan spent a while at the Ultra Guardians' base inside the school.

### Fun facts

- Because Meltan counts as fully evolved in the main games, Eviolite does nothing for it, so Bulbapedia counts it as the one species able to evolve that Eviolite can never boost.
- Meltan was teased at a Pokémon GO Community Day on 22 September 2018 and formally revealed on 25 September 2018.
- In the Let's Go games, Meltan and Melmetal are the sole Pokémon whose Kanto Pokédex numbers differ from their National ones.
- In the anime, it is Professor Oak who gives the species its name.
