Morelull is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Illuminating Pokémon, number 755 (#0755) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 1.5 kg.

Morelull is the Illuminating Pokémon, a tiny glowing mushroom whose flickering spores send anyone who sees them to sleep. The Pokédex says nighttime tours of the forests where Morelull live are popular, even though the spores are dangerous.

## Lore

### Biology

Morelull is a small white Grass and Fairy type, 0.2 m tall and 1.5 kg, with large black eyes and a head far bigger than its thin stem-like body. Three mushrooms sprout from its head: a light pink one in the centre and two smaller purplish-blue ones. At night the spores filling their caps glow, and three green roots at the base of its stem serve as feet.

### Behaviour

Morelull dozes through the day and wakes at nightfall to walk to a new tree, which Bulbapedia says spares any one area from losing too many nutrients. When threatened it throws out spores that flash into glittering sparks, and the pulsing glow makes people drowsy.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it likes damp, dark places. In Sun and Moon it lives at Brooklet Hill and, at night, Lush Jungle.

### Diet

It nourishes itself by sucking on tree roots, according to the Moon Pokédex.

### Powers

Its Ability can be Illuminate or Effect Spore, with Rain Dish hidden. Strength Sap was its signature move in Generation VII, though it could still be passed on by breeding. It also learns Spore, Moonblast and Giga Drain. Its Special Defense of 75 is its best stat, but its Speed of 15 is very low.

### Name origin

Morelull may combine 'morel', a mushroom, and 'lull'. The Japanese name is Nemasyu (ネマシュ), which may come from ne ('sleep') and 'mushroom'.

### Design inspiration

Morelull may draw on glow-in-the-dark mushrooms such as the Mycena genus, though its name points to the morel genus. Its Fairy type may come from fairy rings or fairy fire. Its Japanese category, Hakkō Pokémon, may pun on hakkō meaning both 'fermentation' and 'luminescence'.

### Evolution notes

Morelull evolves into Shiinotic at level 24.

### In the games

Morelull is a night-time find in Sun and Moon, its debut games. It also appears in Sword and Shield, including Max Raid Battles in the Isle of Armor's Fields of Honor, but it is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Morelull debuted in 'Lulled to La-La Land!', where a group evolved into Shiinotic, and one had been draining energy from Ash and his classmates to help sustain a tree. Goh caught a Morelull in Glimwood Tangle in 'The Tale of You and Glimwood Tangle!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Morelull is the first Grass and Fairy Pokémon to debut with that type pairing, because the Cottonee line debuted as pure Grass.
- Morelull is a counterpart to Paras: both have a base stat total of 285 and evolve at level 24, and in Sun and Moon Morelull appears at night while Paras appears in the day.
- The caps on its head are a delicacy for other forest Pokémon, and the Sword Pokédex says they regrow overnight.
