## Lore

### Biology

Mudkip is a small, amphibious quadruped, 0.4 m tall and 7.6 kg, with a blue body and paler underside, a big head crowned by a blue fin, and a light blue tail fin. Its eyes are small, black and beady, and orange gills on its cheeks let it breathe in water. The head fin works like a radar, picking up changes in the flow of water and air, and the large tail fin gives it strong acceleration when it swims.

### Behaviour

Despite its size, Mudkip can crush or move boulders bigger than itself. Bulbapedia, citing its Pokémon Ranger entry, calls it very docile. It rests by burying itself in the mud of a riverbed or the water's edge.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge, and Bulbapedia says Mudkip lives in swamps and other wetlands, though it is more common in captivity. In Scarlet and Violet it can be found in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth areas added by The Indigo Disk.

### Powers

Torrent boosts its Water moves by half when its HP is low, and its hidden Ability Damp shuts down Self-Destruct, Explosion and Aftermath. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Water Gun and Rock Throw, then Surf at level 30 and Hydro Pump at level 39, and can use Muddy Water by TM. Its best base stat is Attack at 70.

### Name origin

Mudkip may combine 'mud', 'skip' and 'mudskipper'. The Japanese name is Mizugorou (ミズゴロウ), which may join 水 mizu (water) and 鯥五郎 mutsugorō, the Japanese name for the mudskipper.

### Design inspiration

Mudkip appears to be based on a mudpuppy or mudskipper, or possibly an axolotl. Bulbapedia adds that its Mud Fish title might also point to a gilled lungfish from East Africa or the flathead catfish, known as the mudcat. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at level 16, and Marshtomp into Swampert at level 36.

### In the games

Mudkip is one of the starters Professor Birch offers in Ruby and Sapphire, and it returns in Emerald and in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In Legends: Z-A it is available only in the Mega Dimension DLC, in the Water-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Mudkip debuted in 'Get the Show on the Road!', when May took one from Professor Birch's bag to scare off a pack of Poochyena and it hit her with Water Gun instead. Brock later caught a Mudkip in 'A Mudkip Mission'.

### Fun facts

- The meme began when the owner of a DeviantArt group called MudkipClub invited people to join by posting 'so i herd u liek mudkipz?' on their pages, and Pokémon Trading Card Game Live later gave Mudkip a catchphrase that nods to it.
- In the Project Voltage music video 'Fly With You', a remix of Littleroot Town's theme, Mudkip rides in Pelipper's beak and wonders about its coming evolution.
- In Pokémon Sleep, Bulbapedia says, a sleeping Mudkip has been spotted still straining to crush rocks.
