# Natu

Tiny Bird Pokémon · Psychic/Flying-type

Natu is a [Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Tiny Bird Pokémon, number 177 (#0177) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 2 kg.

Natu is the Tiny Bird Pokémon, a Psychic and Flying type whose wings have not grown enough to fly, so it hops everywhere and stares at whatever catches its eye. The Pokédex says the moment you move, it bounds away to safety.

## Lore

### Biology

Natu is a round, mostly green bird, 0.2 m tall and 2 kg, with red, yellow and black accents, a red crest, three red tail feathers and small striped wings. It cannot fly, but it can climb tree trunks, and the Pokédex says its jumping power is outstanding: it can leap onto branches taller than a grown-up. Its almond-shaped eyes give it a look of constant, careful observation.

### Behaviour

Natu is cautious and easily spooked. Bulbapedia links this to its prophetic powers, and the Pokédex says it stares back at anyone who meets its eye, then hops off if they so much as move. It usually forages on the ground and only occasionally hops up onto a branch.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists forests, and Bulbapedia says it lives around ruins and in temperate and tropical forests. Entries also mention savannas, and today it turns up in Sword and Shield's Wild Area.

### Diet

It picks new sprouts and buds from trees, and the Pokédex says it takes food from cactus plants, skilfully avoiding the spines.

### Powers

Synchronize passes burns, paralysis and poison back to whoever caused them, Early Bird wakes it from sleep twice as fast, and its hidden Ability Magic Bounce reflects most status moves. It learns Teleport, Confuse Ray and Night Shade, then Psychic at level 35 and Future Sight at 45 in Sword and Shield. With 70 base Special Attack and 70 Speed, it is quick but fragile.

### Name origin

Natu may come from 'nature'. The Japanese name is Naty (ネイティ), which may come from 'native'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Natu as a quetzal, a colourful bird family from the Americas, and says it could also draw on parrots, possibly the kakapo, or a quail. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Natu evolves into Xatu at level 25.

### In the games

Natu lives in the Ruins of Alph in Gold and Silver, where it first appeared. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A, according to Bulbapedia's availability table.

### In the anime

Natu's debut was 'Doin' What Comes Natu-rally!', where two Natu told fortunes with Future Sight. In 'Historical Mystery Tour!' a Natu drew Ash and his friends into Xatu Forest.

### Fun facts

- In Generation II Natu was filed as the Little Bird Pokémon, one of just five Pokémon whose English category was ever changed for a reason beyond formatting, according to Bulbapedia.
- In the Spaceworld '97 demo, Natu appears to have been a brown Pokémon called Neiti that evolved using a Heart Stone.
- A level 5 'Safeguard Natu' was given out at the Gotta Catch 'Em All Station in the United States in 2002.
