# Nidoran♀

Poison Pin Pokémon · Poison-type

![Nidoran♀ official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/29.webp)

Nidoran♀ is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)-type Pokémon, the Poison Pin Pokémon, number 29 (#0029) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 7 kg.

Nidoran♀ is the Poison Pin Pokémon, a gentle creature with a deadly secret: the Pokédex warns that even one drop of toxin seeping from its barbs can kill. It hates to fight and keeps the poison for when it feels threatened.

## How to pronounce Nidoran♀

Nidoran♀ is pronounced **NEE-doh-ran FEE-mayl**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Nidoran♀ is 0.4 m tall and weighs 7 kg. It is light blue with darker blue spots, with large spiny ears, red eyes, whiskers on each cheek, big front teeth and two white claws on each paw. A small horn and small toxic barbs sit on its head and back, and the Pokédex says the female's horn is smaller and more rounded than a male's.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex calls it docile and mild-mannered, and says it protects itself with poison only when it is attacked. Its sense of smell is better than the male's: while hunting for berries it uses its whiskers to check the wind and stays downwind of predators.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Grassland, and Bulbapedia says it lives in open spaces such as savannas and plains.

### Diet

It forages for berries and crushes them with its hard front teeth.

### Powers

Its Ability is Poison Point, which can poison attackers that touch it, or Rivalry, with Hustle hidden. It uses Poison Sting, Toxic Spikes, Double Kick, Bite and Crunch, and learns Earth Power later. With 55 base HP and every other stat at 52 or below, it is a modest early-game Poison type, and the species is always female.

### Name origin

Nidoran♀ may come from 'needle' with the ♀ symbol marking its sex, and may also play on nido (二度, 'twice'). The Japanese name is Nidoran♀ (ニドラン♀).

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Nidoran♀. It appears to blend rabbits and rodents with venomous mammals, and Bulbapedia says it also recalls Al-Mi'raj, a horned rabbit of Arabic legend. The Moon Stone needed for its final form may nod to the Moon rabbit of legend. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Nidoran♀ evolves into Nidorina at level 16, and Nidorina becomes Nidoqueen with a Moon Stone. Its Eggs can hatch as either Nidoran♀ or Nidoran♂.

### In the games

Bulbapedia lists Nidoran♀ as catchable in Let's Go, the Crown Tundra of Sword and Shield, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A. It first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).

### In the anime

In 'Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?', Emily's Nidoran♀ Maria falls in love with Ralph's Nidoran♂ Tony, while their Trainers hate each other. In 'Leading a Stray!', several Nidoran♀ help a Luxio rescue a Wailmer trapped in the sewers.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂ were the earliest Pokémon to hint at gender, before gender became a game mechanic in Generation II.
- Its Shiny colouring is close to Nidoran♂'s normal colouring, and the reverse.
- Because the ♀ symbol is part of its name, summary screens from Generation II on, apart from Generation VIII, treat an un-nicknamed Nidoran♀ as if its gender were unknown.
