# Nosepass

Compass Pokémon · Rock-type

![Nosepass official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/299.webp)

Nosepass is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)-type Pokémon, the Compass Pokémon, number 299 (#0299) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 97 kg.

Nosepass is the Compass Pokémon, a Rock type whose red magnetic nose always points north, which is why travellers have used it to find their way. It hardly moves at all, but when it is in trouble the Pokédex says it can spin into the ground like a drill in a split second.

## How to pronounce Nosepass

Nosepass is pronounced **NOHZ-pas**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Nosepass is a blue, angular biped, 1 m tall and 97 kg, that closely resembles a moai statue. Its triangular red nose is a powerful magnet, its arms look like compass needles, and dark mask-like markings make its eyes look closed.

### Behaviour

Nosepass is almost motionless: the Pokédex says it creeps about 1 cm (3/8 of an inch) a year. It hunts without twitching, pulling prey in with magnetism, though it sometimes drags in natural enemies. If two meet, their noses repel each other so neither can turn to face the other. The Pokédex also says its magnetism grows stronger in the cold seasons.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists Nosepass as a cave Pokémon. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives with The Teal Mask, in Kitakami's Wilds, Oni Mountain, Paradise Barrens and Wistful Fields, and in 3-star Tera Raids. It cannot be obtained in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Nosepass's Abilities are Sturdy, which stops it being knocked out from full HP, and Magnet Pull, which stops Steel types from fleeing or switching out; Sand Force is hidden. It uses Rock Slide, Power Gem, Thunder Wave and Zap Cannon, with Lock-On to guide the cannon. Its 135 base Defense is huge, but its HP and Speed are only 30.

### Name origin

Nosepass may combine 'nose' (or a corruption of 'north') with 'compass'. The Japanese name is Nosepass (ノズパス, transliterated Nozupasu), which reads as the English name in katakana.

### Design inspiration

Nosepass looks like a moai, one of the Easter Island statues, crossed with a compass. Its nose may play on the phrase 'follow one's nose', or on a Japanese pun between 'nose' and 'north'. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Nosepass evolves into Probopass if it gains a level in a special magnetic field or, from Legends: Arceus onwards, when it is given a Thunder Stone.

### In the games

Roxanne, the Rustboro City Gym Leader, uses a Nosepass in Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared. In Legends: Arceus it can be found in the Coronet Highlands.

### In the anime

Roxanne's Nosepass debuted in 'A Winner By a Nosepass', where it held out against Ash until Pikachu's Iron Tail finally beat it.

### Fun facts

- It is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of exactly 375.
- It is the only Pokémon with Magnet Pull that is neither Electric nor Steel.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Sapphire cannot switch out of her Gym fight with Roxanne's Nosepass because of Magnet Pull, so she wins by striking it from behind, since it cannot face any direction but north.

## Pokédex entries

Once the people of Hisui discovered that its red nose always points north, they grew to rely on it greatly when traveling afar. The nose seems to work in a similar way to ancient compasses. *(Legends: Arceus)*

It hunts without twitching a muscle by pulling in its prey with powerful magnetism. But sometimes it pulls natural enemies in close. *(Ultra Moon)*

It moves less than an inch a year, but when it's in a jam, it will spin and drill down into the ground in a split second. *(Ultra Sun)*

It uses powerful magnetism to drag its prey toward it. It's also been known to pull in metal, which it collects and uses to protect itself. *(Moon)*

The magnet in Nosepass's nose provides an unerring compass, making it an excellent partner for Trainers going on a journey. *(Sun)*

Nosepass had been said to be completely unmoving, with its magnetic nose pointed due north. However, close observation has revealed that the Pokémon actually moves by a little over 3/8 of an inch every year. *(Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)*
