# Nuzleaf

Wily Pokémon · Grass/Dark-type

![Nuzleaf official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/274.webp)

Nuzleaf is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)-type Pokémon, the Wily Pokémon, number 274 (#0274) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 28 kg.

Nuzleaf is the Wily Pokémon, a forest trickster that plays a leaf flute whose tune fills lost travellers with dread. Its long pointed nose is where its senses are concentrated, and also its weak spot.

## How to pronounce Nuzleaf

Nuzleaf is pronounced **NUZ-leef**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Nuzleaf said out loud:

In Japanese it is コノハナ (Konohana).

## Lore

### Biology

Nuzleaf is a bipedal brown plant Pokémon, 1 m tall and 28 kg, with a beige mask marking, mitten-like hands and a single green leaf on its head. The Pokédex says its senses are concentrated in its nose, and that it loses its power if the nose is gripped.

### Behaviour

Nuzleaf lives quietly deep in forests, in holes bored into large trees, and is a skilled climber. It pulls the leaf from its head to make a flute, and the Pokédex says the tune unsettles listeners, strikes fear and uncertainty into people lost in the forest, and warns intruders to leave its territory.

### Habitat

Densely overgrown forests, according to the Pokédex. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Kitakami (The Teal Mask) and reaches Paldea only by trade or Pokémon HOME transfer, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

It has Chlorophyll or Early Bird, with Pickpocket hidden. Its moves lean towards tricks and quick strikes: Fake Out, Torment, Swagger and Air Cutter at level 1, then Sucker Punch at 50 and Leaf Blade at 57. Base HP and Attack are both 70.

### Name origin

Nuzleaf may combine 'nuzzle' (to rub with the nose) or 'nose' with 'leaf'. The Japanese name is Konohana (コノハナ), possibly 木の葉 konoha ('leaves') plus 鼻 hana ('nose'); a konoha tengu is a weak kind of tengu.

### Design inspiration

Nuzleaf looks like a sprouting acorn crossed with the tengu, long-nosed Japanese yōkai who guard forests yet enjoy cruel pranks. Bulbapedia also suggests the childlike shibatengu, Pan with his reed pipes, and Pinocchio. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Nuzleaf evolves from Seedot at level 14, and a Leaf Stone turns it into Shiftry.

### In the games

In Super Mystery Dungeon, a Nuzleaf cares for the player when they end up in the Mystery Dungeon world. Nuzleaf first appeared in Hoenn in Ruby and Sapphire.

### In the anime

In 'Turning Over a Nuzleaf', a gang of Nuzleaf caused trouble while Ash's and his friends' Pokémon were separated from them in a forest. Yoko's Nuzleaf carried a note to Gardenia in 'The Grass-Type is Always Greener' and refereed her Gym battle with Ash in 'The Grass Menagerie!'.

### Fun facts

- Several Pokédex entries say Nuzleaf makes a flute from the leaf on its head, yet Bulbapedia notes it has never been able to learn Grass Whistle.
- In Generation III, Extrasensory was Nuzleaf's signature move, though breeding could still pass it on to other Pokémon.
- In Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, hit a Nuzleaf with Makuhita's punch on the Ruby Field and it backs away; hit it again and it builds a bridge to the Ball Upgrade.
