Obstagoon is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Blocking Pokémon, number 862 (#0862) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 46 kg.

Obstagoon is the Blocking Pokémon, the final form of Galarian Zigzagoon, a Dark and Normal type that crosses its arms and shouts loud enough to make any foe flinch. Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn its signature move, Obstruct.

## How to pronounce Obstagoon

## Lore

### Biology

Obstagoon is a bipedal, badger-like Pokémon in black and white with grey fur. Its head juts forward on a long, thick neck, and its pointed snout and long tongue look menacing. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 46 kg.

### Behaviour

Obstagoon is combative but prefers to taunt a foe into striking first, says Bulbapedia, and it is known for duels with Pangoro. The Pokédex says it evolved after numerous fights and takes a threatening posture, shouting at a staggering volume.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it is found at the Lake of Outrage and in Max Raid Battles, and the Expansion Pass adds Giant's Bed and Ballimere Lake.

### Powers

Obstruct is a defensive move: Obstagoon crosses its arms and blocks the attack like Protect, and any attacker that makes contact has its Defense harshly lowered. It also learns Cross Chop, Night Slash, Counter and Taunt. Its Abilities are Reckless, which boosts recoil moves such as Double-Edge, and Guts, with Defiant hidden. With 101 base Defense and 95 Speed it is a sturdy, fast bruiser.

### Name origin

Obstagoon may combine 'obstacle' or 'obstruct' with 'raccoon' and 'goon'. The Japanese name is Tachifusaguma (タチフサグマ), possibly from tachifusagu ('to obstruct') plus anaguma ('badger').

### Design inspiration

James Turner designed Obstagoon, which appears to be a European badger. Its colours, pointed tongue and humanoid look may also nod to glam rock bands, and its name could hint at hired 'goons'. The three stages share a theme of movement: Zigzagoon zigzags, Linoone runs straight and Obstagoon blocks the way. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Obstagoon evolves from Galarian Linoone at level 35 at night. Bulbapedia says Galar's harsh environment and fierce competition sharpen the survival instincts that lead to it.

### In the games

Piers, the Gym Leader of Spikemuth, uses an Obstagoon as his last Pokémon in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A, according to Bulbapedia.

### In the anime

Obstagoon debuted in 'Battling Turned Up to Eleven!', under the ownership of Piers. In the web series Twilight Wings, Bulbapedia's Piers page says his Obstagoon is a member of his rock band, the Maximizers, and one appears in 'The Gathering of Stars' as Piers performs onstage.

### Fun facts

- Dark and Normal is a typing shared by no other Pokémon in the game data.
- Tachifusaguma has 13 letters in romaji, which Bulbapedia says makes it the first Pokémon with a romaji name over 12 characters, the nickname limit in the Western games.
- Bulbapedia says Piers's Obstagoon has maximum EVs in both HP and Defense.
