![Octillery official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/224.webp)

Octillery is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Jet Pokémon, number 224 (#0224) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 28.5 kg.

Octillery is the Jet Pokémon, a tank-headed octopus with a rock-hard skull. The Pokédex says it sprays ink that dulls the sense of smell of keen-nosed Pokémon, and in Ultra Moon's entry that same ink is used in cooking.

## How to pronounce Octillery

## Lore

### Biology

Octillery is a red octopus-like creature with a turret-shaped mouth and large round eyes. Its rock-hard head carries yellow bumps, and each of its eight tentacles has yellow suction cups; Bulbapedia says both are smaller on females. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 28.5 kg. The suction cups give it a strong grip, so it is very hard to blow away.

### Behaviour

Octillery likes to be in holes and rock crevices, and the Silver Pokédex says that when sleepy it steals a fellow Octillery's nest. Bulbapedia says it loves fuss from its Trainer but can be stubborn in the wild.

### Habitat

The Pokédex describes it nesting among boulders and in rocky holes, and it is listed as a Sea Pokémon. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Suction Cups stops it being forced out of battle by other Pokémon's moves, Sniper boosts its critical hits, and Moody is hidden. The Pokédex says it traps foes in its suction-cupped tentacles and then batters them with its head. In Sword and Shield it learns Octazooka on evolving, plus Gunk Shot, Rock Blast, Ice Beam and Hydro Pump, and Bulbapedia says Octazooka was its signature move before Generation VIII. Its 105 base Attack and Special Attack make it a mixed attacker.

### Name origin

Octillery may combine 'octopus' and 'artillery'. The Japanese name is Okutank (オクタン), from 'octopus' and 'tank', meaning either an armoured vehicle or a liquid container.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Octillery appears to be an octopus with some tank or wheeled-cannon influence. Its Spaceworld '97 demo design, called Okutan, was more tank-like still, with a helmet-shaped head and treads for tentacles. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Octillery evolves from Remoraid at level 25. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex says the two look so different that for ages nobody accepted that one becomes the other.

### In the games

Octillery first appeared in Gold and Silver. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team it leads Team Constrictor, a rescue team of Silver Rank, and in Explorers of Sky it is a regular customer at Spinda's Cafe.

### In the anime

Marcellus's Remoraid evolved into Octillery at the end of 'Octillery The Outcast', after he spent most of the episode trying to make it happen. Harley's Octillery beat May's Munchlax in a Contest Battle in 'Harley Rides Again'.

### Fun facts

- In 'Drawn with the Wind!', an Octillery runs a takoyaki stall in Malie City.
- An Octillery appears in the live-action film Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
- Bulbapedia reports a theory that Octillery is a distant relative of Omastar.
- In New Pokémon Snap, Bulbapedia says, one Octillery can be seen just before it becomes a Seviper's meal.

## Pokédex entries

While Octillery still shoots water from its mouth, the drastic anatomical difference between it and Remoraid meant that for a long time, no one believed the former evolved from the latter. *(Legends: Arceus)*

It traps enemies with its suctioncupped tentacles then smashes them with its rock-hard head. *(Gold, LeafGreen, Shield)*

It has a tendency to want to be in holes. It prefers rock crags or pots and sprays ink from them before attacking. *(Black 2, White 2, X, Sword)*

It usually sleeps in caves. The pitch-black ink that Octillery spits is also used for cooking. *(Ultra Moon)*

The ink it spits when escaping is special. It contains a substance that dulls the sense of smell, so Pokémon with keen noses get lost. *(Ultra Sun)*

Octillery grabs onto its foe using its tentacles. This Pokémon tries to immobilize it before delivering the finishing blow. If the foe turns out to be too strong, Octillery spews ink to escape. *(Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)*
