Ogerpon is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Mask Pokémon, number 1017 (#1017) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 39.8 kg.

Ogerpon is the Mask Pokémon, a mischief-loving Grass type whose type changes with the mask it wears, and the mascot of The Teal Mask expansion. In Kitakami's old legends it plays the part of the ogre.

## How to pronounce Ogerpon

## Lore

### Biology

Ogerpon is a female-only humanoid, 1.2 m tall and 39.8 kg, with an orange face, yellow star-pupilled eyes and two pointed fangs. A large green cloak-like structure with a thorny black vine around its face covers its flower-spotted torso, and its sleeves work as grasping arms. Its legs look split from a tree trunk, with growth rings on the soles. Bulbapedia says it is never seen without the cloak, keeps its masks tucked underneath, and grows weaker if they are taken away.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex calls Ogerpon mischief-loving and full of curiosity. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says it likes to wear a mask and blend in with people at Kitakami's Festival of Masks, and that it has raided Mossui Town's food supply for snacks.

### Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat beyond the Kitakami region. In The Teal Mask there is a single Ogerpon waiting at the Dreaded Den.

### Powers

Each mask gives Ogerpon its own type and Ability. Teal Mask is pure Grass with Defiant; Wellspring Mask is Grass and Water with Water Absorb; Hearthflame Mask is Grass and Fire with Mold Breaker; Cornerstone Mask is Grass and Rock with Sturdy. Holding a mask item switches the form, and each form has its own Terastal state with Embody Aspect, which boosts Speed, Special Defense, Attack or Defense respectively. Its Tera Type is fixed by the mask. Its signature move Ivy Cudgel hits hard, often crits, and takes the mask's type; only Ogerpon learns it. With 120 base Attack and 110 Speed it is a fast physical attacker.

### Name origin

Ogerpon may combine 'ogre' with ponkan or dekopon, two kinds of orange, plus the cute Japanese suffix -pon. The Japanese name is Ogerpon (オーガポン), the same as the English.

### Design inspiration

Hitoshi Ariga designed Ogerpon and all its forms, Bulbapedia says, citing his own confirmation. It is based on oni, the ogres of Japanese folklore, and may turn the villainous oni of the Momotarō tale into a hero. Its masks seem to echo Noh theatre masks, its cudgel a kanabō club, and its horned Terastal masks the Nebuta floats of Aomori. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Ogerpon is the mascot of The Teal Mask, the Kitakami expansion for Scarlet and Violet, and the last entry in the Kitakami Pokédex at number 200. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Ogerpon debuts in Pokémon Horizons in its Teal Mask form, befriending Navie and showing off all four masks. It later fights the Loyal Three at Kitakami Hall, where it Terastallizes.

### Fun facts

- Before Ogerpon, each of its dual types belonged to one family alone: Grass and Water to the Lotad line, Grass and Fire to Scovillain, and Grass and Rock to the Lileep line, according to Bulbapedia.
- Follow Me reaches Ogerpon by level-up at level 1; Bulbapedia says it is the first Pokémon never to have been Normal type to learn it that way, since only the Clefairy and Togepi families did before, and they were Normal before Generation VI.
- It can Terastallize without a Tera Orb, supposedly because its masks are made of Tera Shards, just as the Orbs are.
- No Pokémon Trading Card Game card is simply named Ogerpon, because its base form is called Teal Mask Ogerpon; Bulbapedia says Urshifu is in the same boat.
