![Oranguru official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/765.webp)

Oranguru is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Sage Pokémon, number 765 (#0765) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 7 and comes from the [Alola](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/alola) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 76 kg.

Oranguru is the Sage Pokémon, a bearded ape that meditates in the treetops, gives orders to other Pokémon and, the Pokédex says, even throws Poké Balls. It looks down on inexperienced Trainers.

## How to pronounce Oranguru

Oranguru is pronounced **or-RANG-goo-roo**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Oranguru is 1.5 m tall and weighs 76 kg. It is an orangutan-like ape with white fur, a long beard of fur, bare grey hands, feet and snout, and a yellow star-shaped mark on its forehead. Purple fur forms a cape over its back, and the Violet Pokédex says it grows longer as Oranguru ages. Its fan is woven from leaves and its own fur.

### Behaviour

Oranguru spends its time meditating high in the trees. The Pokédex says it knows the forest thoroughly and gathers medicinal herbs to treat any wounded Pokémon it finds. It waves its fan to give instructions to other Pokémon, which Bulbapedia says makes it hard for Trainers to handle. Oranguru do not get along with each other and keep trying to outwit one another, and one will sometimes go down to the beach for a battle of wits with Slowking.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it high in the canopy of the deepest jungle. In the games it is found in Alola's Lush Jungle, Galar's Glimwood Tangle, and Paldea's North Province and Tagtree Thicket.

### Powers

Inner Focus keeps it from flinching, Telepathy lets it dodge attacks from its allies, and its hidden Ability Symbiosis passes its held item to an ally. It learns Instruct at level 50, which makes an ally repeat its last move, along with Trick Room, Foul Play, Psychic and Future Sight. Special Defense 110 is its top stat, so it is a bulky support Pokémon.

### Name origin

Oranguru combines orangutan and guru. The Japanese name is Yareyuutan (ヤレユータン), which may blend yare ('do it') and oran'ūtan (orangutan).

### Design inspiration

Oranguru seems to blend an orangutan with a guru, and its Psychic typing and calm manner may reference the orangutan's high intelligence. Bulbapedia also notes the satori, a mind-reading, ape-like yōkai from Japanese folklore, as a possible influence.

### In the games

Oranguru is exclusive to Moon, Ultra Moon, Shield and Scarlet, says Bulbapedia, and its debut came in Sun and Moon. It appears in 3-star and 5-star Tera Raids, but it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Oranguru debuted in 'Mallow and the Forest Teacher!', in which it came to Mallow's aid after she hurt herself running away from home. It keeps a small café in the forest outside Hau'oli City, and it turns out it once helped her father Abe too.

### Fun facts

- Ancient people took Oranguru for people and called them the 'people of the forests', and Bulbapedia notes that the name orangutan itself means 'person of the forest'.
- According to Bulbapedia, no other known Pokémon can learn Instruct, and in Generation VIII none besides Oranguru could have Symbiosis.
- Bulbapedia gives the pronunciation as 'or-RANG-goo-roo', based on a segment of a 2023 Pokémon World Championships livestream.
