Pin Cluster Pokémon · Dark/Poison-type

![Overqwil official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/904.webp)

Overqwil is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)-type Pokémon, the Pin Cluster Pokémon, number 904 (#0904) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Hisui](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hisui) region. It is 2.5 m tall and weighs 60.5 kg.

Overqwil is the Pin Cluster Pokémon, a bad-tempered Dark and Poison fish bristling with barbed spikes that strike at anything that moves, even while it sleeps. The Pokédex says its savage temper earned it the nickname sea fiend.

## How to pronounce Overqwil

## Lore

### Biology

Overqwil is a huge spherical fish, 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) tall and 60.5 kg (133.4 lb), black above and pale yellow below, with purple-tipped spikes and two very long ones jutting from its top and bottom. Small yellow eyes sit under a pair of spikes that look like angry eyebrows. Its wide tail carries a Q-shaped pattern.

### Behaviour

Overqwil is fierce and short-tempered. Its spikes react by reflex, stabbing any moving thing that comes near, and the Pokédex says they do so even when Overqwil is asleep. Once the barbs have stuck, they are not easily removed.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in cold seas offshore, including the Terarium's Polar Biome. In Legends: Z-A it comes by trade, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose's 5-star Poison wild zones.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it feeds on poison, slurping it up.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Poison Point and Swift Swim, with Intimidate hidden. It learns Barb Barrage at level 28, then Crunch, Spikes and Toxic Spikes. With 115 base Attack and 95 base Defense it is a tough, hard-hitting physical attacker; its Defense is joint-highest among Poison types introduced in Generation VIII.

### Name origin

Overqwil may blend 'overkill' with Qwilfish. The Japanese name is Haryman (ハリーマン), which may swap the sen ('thousand') of Harysen for man ('ten thousand'), making it roughly 'ten thousand needles'.

### Design inspiration

Overqwil seems to be based on an oversized porcupinefish. Bulbapedia also compares its spikes to a lionfish's, a sea urchin's, a morning star, and a kenzan, the spiked plate used to hold flowers in ikebana. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Only Hisuian Qwilfish evolves into Overqwil, and the condition changes by game: Barb Barrage used 20 times in the strong style in Legends: Arceus, a level-up while knowing it in Scarlet and Violet, or 20 hits with it in Legends: Z-A.

### In the games

In Legends: Arceus, where it debuted, a single Alpha Overqwil appears at Lake Valor during Mission 15. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives with The Indigo Disk, where you can evolve a Hisuian Qwilfish, and it also appears in 6-star Tera Raid Battles.

### In the anime

Overqwil debuted in 'Terarium Training!' as one of the Terarium's wild residents.

### Fun facts

- Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl hint at it before Legends: Arceus reveals it: a book in the Canalave Library describes a Qwilfish with huge spikes.
- Overqwil and Hisuian Qwilfish are the only dual-type Dark and Poison Pokémon with Dark as the first type instead of the second.
- Qwilfish and Overqwil are the only Poison types in the Water 2 egg group, and the only Poison types with fins, according to Bulbapedia.
