Palkia is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Spatial Pokémon, number 484 (#0484) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 4.2 m tall and weighs 336 kg.

Palkia is the Spatial Pokémon. This Water and Dragon type can bend space and slip between dimensions. The Pokédex claims its birth made the walls of the world vanish, leaving a sky that has no end.

## Lore

### Biology

Palkia is a theropod-like Pokémon in light purple with darker stripes, a long neck, tusks on its jaw and fin-like wings. Two pink pearl-like crystals sit on its shoulders, and its arms end in gauntlet-like shapes. It is 4.2 m tall and weighs 336 kg. Bulbapedia says its home dimension is said to look shredded and torn apart.

### Behaviour

Palkia is said to dwell in a rift in space beside our world, and the Pokédex says it can travel to faraway places or other dimensions at will. It also says space becomes more stable with each of Palkia's breaths. Bulbapedia adds that in the anime Palkia guards its home closely and fights Dialga whenever their dimensions meet.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; its entries say it lives in a gap in space beside our world. In Pearl, Platinum and Shining Pearl it waits at Spear Pillar, and in Legends: Arceus at the Temple of Sinnoh.

### Powers

No other Pokémon is known to learn Spacial Rend, a Dragon move that tears space apart. Palkia also learns Hydro Pump, Aqua Tail, Aura Sphere and Earth Power. Its Ability is Pressure, with Telepathy hidden. Holding the Lustrous Globe turns it into Origin Forme, which Bulbapedia describes as its true form: 6.3 m tall, with Attack 100 and Speed 120 instead of 120 and 100. With base Special Attack 150 it is a hard-hitting special attacker.

### Name origin

Palkia may combine 'pearl', 'galaxia' and the Japanese kai ('sea'), echoing its Water type and its power over space. The Japanese name is Parukia (パルキア).

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Palkia and Dialga together. Palkia appears to blend a European dragon with a pearl, and its face plates and neck crest resemble the helmets of ancient Greek or Roman soldiers. Bulbapedia also suggests the pair may echo the Shinto myth of Izanami and Izanagi raising the first island with a spear. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### In the games

Palkia is the box mascot of Pearl and returned in Shining Pearl. It is a boss in Legends: Arceus, and it plays a major part in the post-story of Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives only by transfer from Pokémon HOME or an event, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Its physical debut came in the film 'The Rise of Darkrai', where Palkia fights Dialga and Darkrai above Alamos Town. In 'The Gates of Warp!' and 'Showdown at the Gates of Warp!', Alternate World Team Rocket uses a Red Chain to force it and Dialga to fight, which turns Pokémon back into Eggs that the team can steal.

### Fun facts

- Only Palkia and Dialga can be caught in every type of Poké Ball in the core series, because the Origin Ball works on them alone (the Park Ball aside).
- Palkia's gender changes between media: unknown in the core games, male in Explorers of Time and Darkness, and female in the anime's Russian dub.
- Bulbapedia says the end of one of Palkia's anime roars carries a roar from Mecha-King Ghidorah, a monster from a 1991 Toho film.
- In Explorers of Time and Darkness, Palkia speaks in capital letters, as do Primal Dialga, Regigigas and the Magnemite line, among others.
- Origin Forme Palkia, at 659 kg, outweighs every other Water type, Gigantamax forms aside.
