Pansear is a [Fire](https://pokee.si/types/fire)-type Pokémon, the High Temp Pokémon, number 513 (#0513) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 11 kg.

Pansear is the High Temp Pokémon, a clever red monkey with a flame in its head tuft that is hot enough to roast berries. It is the Fire member of the Striaton Gym trio of elemental monkeys.

## How to pronounce Pansear

Pansear is pronounced **PAN-seer**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Pansear is a red-and-cream monkey, 0.6 m tall and 11 kg, with a whorled tuft that holds a flame and a tail with an arrowhead-shaped tip. The Pokédex says the fire in its tuft can reach 300 °C (600 °F). Its hands look fingerless apart from a thumb.

### Behaviour

Pansear is very intelligent and likes to help people. The Pokédex says it roasts berries over its tuft before eating them.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in caves in volcanoes, and Bulbapedia adds forests. In Black and White it lives in the inner Pinwheel Forest and Lostlorn Forest. In Legends: Z-A it is wild in all five Lumiose districts, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Diet

Berries, which it roasts first.

### Powers

Gluttony lets it eat a held Berry early, while Blaze, its hidden Ability, boosts Fire moves when it is low on health. It learns Incinerate, Flame Burst and Fire Blast, and later Crunch. With base Speed 64 and 53 in both Attack and Special Attack, its stats are modest.

### Name origin

Pansear may combine Pan, the chimpanzee genus, with 'sear', 'ear' and pan searing. The Japanese name is Baoppu (バオップ), which may come from the Chinese bào ('burst'), the English 'burst' and 'ape'.

### Design inspiration

Like its two siblings, Pansear was designed by Takao Unno as a partner for a Striaton Gym Leader, here Chili. Its head resembles a flame, and with a hand held by its ear it seems to stand for 'hear no evil' in the three wise monkeys motif, a fan reading.

### Evolution notes

Pansear evolves into Simisear when a Fire Stone is used on it.

### In the games

In Black and White, Pansear is the Fire partner of Chili, one of the three Striaton Gym Leaders, who uses it against players who chose Snivy. It is not in Scarlet and Violet.

### In the anime

Chili's Pansear debuted in 'Triple Leaders, Team Threats!' and lost to Ash's Tepig in a Gym battle. Goh caught one in 'Thrash of the Titans!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Pansear and Simisear are the only Pokémon with Blaze that are not a first partner Pokémon.
- A recurring Pansear, with a Pansage and a Panpour, belongs to Tyler in the Pokémon Concierge series.
- In the manga Pocket Monsters BW, the three monkeys' group attack on Red's Clefairy backfires when Clefairy uses their effects to make green tea.
