It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 10.2 kg.

Pawniard is the Sharp Blade Pokémon, a small Dark and Steel type whose whole body is made of blades. It fights for a Bisharp boss and trains hard in the hope of taking the lead one day.

## Lore

### Biology

Pawniard is 0.5 m tall and 10.2 kg, with a red and black body, a silvery blade jutting from its head and knife-like blades in place of hands. Pairs of steel blades stick out from both sides of its torso. The Pokédex says blades make up its entire body.

### Behaviour

Pawniard lives in a pack that serves a Bisharp boss, and each member trains diligently, hoping one day to lead. It follows Bisharp's orders to the letter, clinging to prey and sinking in its blades even when injured. It sharpens them on a favourite stone by a river, because the Pokédex says any chip would be fatal.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it near rivers, where it keeps its sharpening stones. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in rivers and rocky areas of Paldea and in Kitakami.

### Powers

Defiant sharply raises its Attack whenever an opponent lowers one of its stats, Inner Focus stops flinching, and Pressure is its Hidden Ability. It slashes with Fury Cutter, Metal Claw, Night Slash and Iron Head, and later learns Swords Dance and Guillotine. With base Attack 85 it hits hard for a first stage.

### Name origin

Pawniard may combine 'pawn', the lowest chess piece or a low-level operative, with 'poignard' or 'poniard', a light dagger. The Japanese name is Komatana (コマタナ), which may mix koma (a shogi piece), ko (small) and katana (sword) or kogatana (knife).

### Design inspiration

Art director Ken Sugimori said the team was asked for an urban Dark and Steel Pokémon, and that Pawniard and Bisharp were given humanoid and insect qualities. Bulbapedia reads Pawniard as a Japanese bandit lackey in ashigaru-style armour, with the beetle look possibly nodding to the samurai kabuto helmet. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Pawniard evolves into Bisharp at level 52, and Bisharp can later become Kingambit.

### In the games

Two Pawniard, the Pawniard Brothers, are minor villains in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Players find it on Routes 9 and 11 in Black and White, its first game. Scarlet and Violet has it in Paldea and Kitakami, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Georgia's Pawniard debuted in 'Cilan Versus Trip, Ash Versus Georgia!' and lost to Ash's Snivy. 'Search for the Clubultimate!' revealed that it had evolved into Bisharp.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that no other Pokémon shares the Pawniard line's Dark and Steel typing, and these are the two types that were introduced in Generation II.
- No other Pokémon evolves at level 52, and among first stages of three-stage lines Pawniard evolves at the highest level.
- In Generation V, when Steel resisted Ghost, Pawniard and Bisharp took only a quarter of normal damage from Ghost moves.
