Bulb Pokémon · Grass-type

![Petilil official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/548.webp)

Petilil is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Bulb Pokémon, number 548 (#0548) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 6.6 kg.

Petilil is the Bulb Pokémon, a female-only Grass type with bitter head leaves that, some say, bring back vigour once dried and boiled. The Ultra Sun Pokédex gives that as the reason it is popular with the elderly.

## How to pronounce Petilil

Petilil is pronounced **PET-ih-lil**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Petilil looks like a bulb, rather like an onion, 0.5 m tall and 6.6 kg and mostly light green, with three oblong leaves on its head: the deeper their colour, the healthier the Pokémon. Its white crescent-shaped face has brown eyes and no visible nose or mouth, and its lower body is five stubs, two of which act as arms.

### Behaviour

Petilil prefers clean water and soil, and the Ultra Moon Pokédex says that when its environment turns bad, the whole group moves to a new area. It can settle in a carefully kept field or flowerbed. Its head leaves grow right back if they fall out, and regular pruning can grow it into a fine plump shape.

### Habitat

Petilil turns up beside clean water and in damp soil rich in nutrients. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South and West Provinces and in Kitakami.

### Powers

Petilil's Abilities are Chlorophyll and Own Tempo, with Leaf Guard hidden. It drains health with Absorb, Mega Drain and Giga Drain, puts foes to sleep with Sleep Powder and paralyses them with Stun Spore, and learns Leaf Storm at level 42.

### Name origin

Petilil may combine petal, petite, petunia or petiole with 'lily' or 'li'l', meaning little. The Japanese name is Churine (チュリネ), possibly from chūrippu ('tulip'), yurine ('lily bulb') and ne ('root').

### Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Petilil and Lilligant. Bulbapedia reads Petilil as a lily-family bulb, most likely a tulip, with a Shiny colouring that may nod to yellow onions or golden garlic. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Petilil evolves into Lilligant when a Sun Stone is used on it, with no level requirement.

### In the games

Petilil first appears in Black and White, where it is wild in White's Pinwheel Forest and Lostlorn Forest. In Legends: Arceus it lives in the Crimson Mirelands, including massive mass outbreaks. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Paldea and in The Teal Mask's Kitakami, including 1-star Tera Raid Battles. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Petilil's animated series debut came in 'Clash of the Connoisseurs!', where Ricard Nouveau thought it would suit Marigold, but Cilan disagreed, much to Marigold's relief.

### Fun facts

- Ken Sugimori said the Petilil line was first meant to have three stages, not two.
- Petilil and Cottonee are tied on a base stat total of 280, the lowest of any Grass type in Generation V.
- Petilil turns up as an enemy in the Smash Run mode of the 3DS Super Smash Bros., spraying Sleep Powder over a wide area.
