Long Nose Pokémon · Ground-type

![Phanpy official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/231.webp)

Phanpy is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)-type Pokémon, the Long Nose Pokémon, number 231 (#0231) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 33.5 kg.

Phanpy is the Long Nose Pokémon, a baby-elephant Ground type that uses its trunk as a shower and a nose-bump to show affection. It is so strong that its friendly bumps can send you flying.

## How to pronounce Phanpy

Phanpy is pronounced **FAN-pee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Phanpy is a small blue elephant, 0.5 m tall and 33.5 kg, with big floppy ears, red pads on its ears and on its short trunk, and one nail on each foot. The Pokédex says it flaps its ears like fans to cool down, and that even young Phanpy are very strong, while an adult human is no burden on its back.

### Behaviour

Phanpy shows affection by bumping with its snout, which, the Pokédex says, is strong enough to send you flying. In deserted early mornings it comes ashore and uses its trunk as a shower. When other Phanpy gather, they douse each other with water. It digs a vertical pit by a riverbank for its nest and marks the area with its trunk.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in rocky terrain and nests near rivers. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Asado Desert and parts of South and West Province.

### Powers

Phanpy has Pickup, with Sand Veil hidden. It rolls with Rollout, charges with Take Down and Double-Edge, and uses Bulldoze and Defense Curl. Its HP of 90 is unusually high for an unevolved Pokémon, while its other stats sit between 40 and 60.

### Name origin

Phanpy may come from 'elephant' and possibly 'infant' or the suffix '-y'. The Japanese name is Gomazou (ゴマゾウ), perhaps from komakai ('small') and zō ('elephant').

### Design inspiration

Phanpy seems based on an elephant calf, with bright colours like a toy. Bulbapedia suggests the red pads may echo the cloths and jewellery that adorn festival elephants in India, and that its roll mimics tyres. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Phanpy evolves into Donphan at level 25.

### In the games

Phanpy is wild in Scarlet and Violet, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A. It first appeared in Gold and Silver.

### In the anime

Ash's Phanpy hatched from an Egg in 'Hatching a Plan' after he got the Egg in 'Extreme Pokémon!'. A Phanpy in 'Spell of the Unown: Entei' beat Brock's Onix with a single Rollout.

### Fun facts

- In the Spaceworld '97 demo it appears to be an earlier design called Paon.
- Phanpy and Teddiursa are the only Pokémon whose version exclusivity swapped between localisations: in Gold and Silver, Phanpy is exclusive to Gold in Japan and Korea, but to Silver elsewhere.
- Both Phanpy and Teddiursa have Pickup and lose it on evolving, Bulbapedia points out.
