Pincurchin is a [Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the Sea Urchin Pokémon, number 871 (#0871) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1 kg.

Pincurchin is the Sea Urchin Pokémon, an Electric type that makes electricity as it digests seaweed and stores it in its spines. Even a spine that breaks off keeps sparking for at least three hours, the Pokédex says.

## How to pronounce Pincurchin

## Lore

### Biology

Pincurchin is 0.3 m tall and weighs 1 kg. It has a black, sea-urchin body with yellow eyes, triangular pupils and two yellow mouthparts. A line of spines runs down its back, with two short lines of two spines on its sides, each tipped grey and glowing yellow when current flows. Its five hard teeth do the scraping, and the Pokédex says its lips do not conduct electricity.

### Behaviour

Pincurchin is timid: the Pokédex says even brushing against seaweed makes it discharge in surprise. Bulbapedia says this jumpiness helps keep off its natural predator, Mareanie.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Paldea's beaches in the East, North and West Provinces, and also around Glaseado Mountain.

### Diet

Seaweed, which it scrapes off rocks and other surfaces with its teeth.

### Powers

Its Ability is Lightning Rod, which pulls Electric moves towards it and turns them into Special Attack, or the hidden Electric Surge, which sets Electric Terrain on arrival. Bulbapedia says Zing Zap is its signature move in Generation IX, alongside Discharge, Spark, Poison Jab and Recover. With base Attack 101, Defense 95 and Special Defense 85 it is built to hit and soak up damage.

### Name origin

Pincurchin may combine 'pincushion' and 'sea urchin'. The Japanese name is Bachinuni (バチンウニ), which may blend bachin (the crackle of electricity) with uni ('sea urchin').

### Design inspiration

Pincurchin may be modelled on a sea urchin, in particular a burrowing kind, and perhaps on a pincushion. Its yellow mouthparts may nod to sea urchin roe, a prized food, and its Electric type could recall sea urchin fossils once thought in southern England to be petrified thunderbolts. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Players meet Pincurchin on Route 9 and in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 3, 5 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Pincurchin debuted in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!' as a Trainer's Pokémon. Hop owns one that briefly appears in the animated music video GOTCHA!.

### Fun facts

- Its base Speed of 15 is the lowest of any Electric type.
- Bulbapedia lists it as the sole Electric type with a multiped body shape.
- In Pokémon: Twilight Wings, four Pincurchin live in a lake where Nessa is doing a photo shoot in 'Early-Evening Waves'.
- Two motorised Pincurchin plushies in the Munchies Watch collection have their mouths joined by a stretchy green strand of kelp.
