Duck Pokémon · Water-type

![Psyduck official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/54.webp)

Psyduck is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Duck Pokémon, number 54 (#0054) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 19.6 kg.

Psyduck is the Duck Pokémon, a permanently puzzled yellow duck with a constant headache. When the pain gets bad enough it unleashes strong psychic power, then has no memory of having done so.

## How to pronounce Psyduck

Psyduck is pronounced **SY-duk**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is コダック (Koduck).

## Lore

### Biology

Psyduck is a yellow duck-like Pokémon, 0.8 m tall and 19.6 kg, with a wide flat cream beak, three strands of black hair, vacant eyes, stubby legs and webbed feet. The Ruby Pokédex says its brain waves match a sleeper's when it uses its power, and the Sapphire Pokédex says it drops into a state like deep sleep, so it remembers nothing.

### Behaviour

Psyduck is too dazed by its headache to think clearly, so it usually stands still and tries to calm the pain. Stress makes the headache worse, and one Pokédex entry says it can bring Psyduck to tears. Pokémon Sleep says it gets headaches even in its sleep.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia lists it as a water's-edge Pokémon of freshwater lakes and small ponds. In Scarlet and Violet it lives around Paldea's lakes, rivers and swamps.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Damp, which stops Explosion and Self-Destruct, Cloud Nine, which cancels weather effects, and the hidden Swift Swim. It learns Confusion, Zen Headbutt, Water Pulse and Aqua Tail, and can pick up Psychic from a TM, but its best base stat is only 65 Special Attack.

### Name origin

Psyduck is probably 'psychic' (or 'psy-') plus 'duck'. The Japanese name is Koduck (コダック), possibly ko meaning 'small' or 'child' plus duck.

### Design inspiration

Psyduck looks like a duck, and its yellow colour and simple shape may recall a rubber duck. The missing neck, clawed hands and few strands of hair on its head also resemble a platypus. Bulbapedia suggests the kappa, a mischievous Japanese water spirit, may be another influence. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Psyduck evolves into Golduck at level 33.

### In the games

Psyduck is best known for the crowd that blocks Route 210 in Sinnoh until Cynthia gives you a Secret Medicine for their headaches (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum and the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes). Introduced in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), it is catchable in Scarlet and Violet and is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Misty's Psyduck debuted in 'Hypno's Naptime', where she caught it by accident. It is usually a bumbling sidekick, but a bad enough headache lets loose psychic moves far beyond what it should manage, and a clone of it fought in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

### Fun facts

- Junichi Masuda has said Psyduck is his favourite and was considered as Pikachu's counterpart in the Let's Go games before Eevee was chosen, but looked too close to Pikachu in colour.
- Bulbapedia says Psyduck needs more Capture Styler loops than any other Pokémon in Pokémon Ranger, even Metagross.
- Bulbapedia notes that Scarlet and Violet's data gives Psyduck Simple Beam by breeding, yet no Pokémon in those games could learn the move, so no Psyduck could ever hatch with it until HOME was updated.
