# Pyroar

Royal Pokémon · Fire/Normal-type

![Pyroar official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/668.webp)

Pyroar is a [Fire](https://pokee.si/types/fire)/[Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Royal Pokémon, number 668 (#0668) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 81.5 kg.

Pyroar, the Royal Pokémon, is a lion of Fire and Normal types whose blazing mane marks the leader of its pride. Males and females look quite different, and Mega Pyroar in Legends: Z-A appears to merge the two.

## How to pronounce Pyroar

Pyroar is pronounced **PY-ror**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Pyroar is 1.5 m tall and 81.5 kg, with dark brown fur, lighter legs, chest and face, and bright blue eyes. A male has a huge red mane streaked with gold in a pattern that resembles the kanji for 'large' and for fire. A female has a gold and red crest running back from her forehead, as long as her body. Females greatly outnumber males.

### Behaviour

Pyroar live in prides, and the Pokédex says the male with the biggest fiery mane is the leader. The females protect the cubs and hunt together, so the pride is never short of food. A male is usually lazy, but against a strong foe he will protect his friends with no regard for his own safety.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in grassy plains and on mountainsides and is active by day. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in North Province, the Dalizapa Passage and The Indigo Disk's Savanna biome, and in Legends: Z-A in Wild Zone 17 and in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Mega Dimension DLC.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it prefers raw meat and does not use its fiery breath on its prey.

### Powers

The Pokédex says its breath is hotter than 6,000°C (10,000°F), and a male's mane heats past 2,000°C (3,600°F) in battle. It has Rivalry and Unnerve, with Moxie hidden, and learns Flamethrower at level 38 and Overheat at level 57; base Special Attack 109 and Speed 106 make it a fast special attacker. Mega Pyroar, introduced in Legends: Z-A with the Pyroarite, swings a much larger mane to protect allies, breathes flames the Pokédex says are hotter than 10,000°C (18,000°F), and has base Special Attack 129 and Speed 126.

### Name origin

Pyroar may combine 'pyro-', a prefix for fire, and 'roar'. The Japanese name is Kaenjishi (カエンジシ), which may blend kaen ('flame') and shishi ('lion').

### Design inspiration

A lion seems to be the model for Pyroar. Bulbapedia suggests its spiky fur nods to stylised lions in heraldry, and that the gold pattern on the male's mane resembles the Daimonji, the character 大 lit as a bonfire at Japan's Gozan no Okuribi festival. Mega Pyroar's mane resembles the kanji 炎, 'flame'. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Pyroar evolves from Litleo at level 35.

### In the games

Mega Pyroar is one of the Mega Evolutions introduced in Legends: Z-A. Pyroar first appeared in X and Y, where it is found in the Fire-type Friend Safari.

### In the anime

Lysandre's male Pyroar first appeared in 'Mega Evolution Special II'. In 'A Fiery Rite of Passage!' a pride of three females and one male appears, and the male makes a Litleo cub leave while quietly keeping an eye on it.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Pyroar is the one Pokémon with a heavily female gender ratio that also has gender differences.
- Litleo and Pyroar introduced Normal as a secondary type; no Pokémon had it before them, regional forms of older species aside.
- Bulbapedia notes that a female Pyroar is shown on the utility hole covers of Lumiose City's Rouge District, whose theme is determination.
- Bulbapedia says no Pokémon other than Mega Pyroar is known to have the Ability Fire Mane.
