Relicanth is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)-type Pokémon, the Longevity Pokémon, number 369 (#0369) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 23.4 kg.

Relicanth is the Longevity Pokémon, a coelacanth-like Water and Rock type that the Pokédex says has not changed in 100 million years. It was found on a deep-sea expedition and is treated as a living fossil.

## How to pronounce Relicanth

## Lore

### Biology

Relicanth is a fish covered in hard brown scales like craggy rocks, with a tan head, a spike at the back of the head and a red spot on each side. It pushes itself along the seabed with its pectoral fins. It is 1 m tall and weighs 23.4 kg. The Pokédex says it survives deep-sea pressure thanks to rock-hard scales, a fatty body and swim bladders full of oil.

### Behaviour

Relicanth lives in the deep sea, and the Emerald Pokédex says it was once believed to be extinct. The Ultra Moon Pokédex puts its unchanged shape down to it apparently being a perfect life-form already.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places Relicanth in the deep sea. In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald it is found underwater on Routes 124 and 126, and in Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra it turns up around Ballimere Lake. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

The Ruby Pokédex says it feeds on microscopic organisms, taking them in through its toothless mouth.

### Powers

Swift Swim and Rock Head are its regular Abilities, with Sturdy hidden. Rock Head means it takes no recoil from Head Smash, which it learns at level 55 alongside Ancient Power, Aqua Tail and Double-Edge. With base Defense 130 and HP 100 it is very hard to knock down, though its Special Attack is only 45.

### Name origin

Relicanth may combine 'relic', 'relict' and 'coelacanth'. The Japanese name is Glanth (ジーランス, transliterated Jīransu), perhaps from the Japanese jī ('old man') and 'coelacanth'.

### Design inspiration

Relicanth is based on the coelacanth, a fish once thought extinct until one turned up in 1938, and its Rock type reflects the 'living fossil' idea. Its Ultra Sun Pokédex line about being named after its finder may echo the real genus Latimeria, named for Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Relicanth and Wailord are both tied to the Sealed Chamber puzzle that opens other locations in Hoenn, according to Bulbapedia. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, where it is found underwater.

### In the anime

Many Relicanth debuted in 'A Ruin With a View', where Ash, May and Professor Alden find a lake full of them. In 'The Relicanth Really Can!', Relicanth lead Adam and Evelyn to treasure.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Relicanth is the only Rock type in the 'Pokémon with fins' body shape category and the only Rock type in the Water 2 egg group.
- Its EV yield of 1 HP and 1 Defense is shared by no other Pokémon in poke.si's data.
- Like the Fossil Pokémon, it has a seven-to-one male to female ratio, and Bulbapedia says an art print for the 2019 World Championships even listed it as one.

## Pokédex entries

This Pokémon was discovered during deep-sea exploration. Its appearance hasn't changed in 100,000,000 years, so it's called a living fossil. *(Shield)*

Rock-hard scales and oil-filled swim bladders allow this Pokémon to survive the intense water pressure of the deep sea. *(Sword)*

The reason it hasn't changed at all in a hundred million years is that it's apparently already a perfect life-form. *(Ultra Moon)*

Thought to have gone extinct, Relicanth was given a name that is a variation of the name of the person who discovered it. *(Ultra Sun)*

It was fortuitously discovered during a deep sea expedition. Its teeth have atrophied, so it now survives on microscopic organisms it sucks up. *(Moon)*

Its form has remained the same for one hundred million years. Its body is filled with fat, so it can withstand the water pressure of the deep sea. *(Sun)*
