# Rhyperior

Drill Pokémon · Ground/Rock-type

![Rhyperior official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/464.webp)

Rhyperior is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)-type Pokémon, the Drill Pokémon, number 464 (#0464) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 2.4 m tall and weighs 282.8 kg.

Rhyperior is a living siege engine: a drill-horned Ground and Rock type that fires rocks from cannon-like holes in its palms. A Rhydon becomes one when it is traded while holding an item called the Protector.

## How to pronounce Rhyperior

Rhyperior is pronounced **ry-PEER-ee-er**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Rhyperior is a huge brownish-grey rhinoceros-like Pokémon with a drill-shaped main horn and a second horn above it, smaller on females. Orange rocky plates armour it from the head and shoulders down to the waist and knees, and its arms too. Blade-like points stick out of its elbows, it has a club-like tail and each palm has a hole that works as a cannon. It stands 2.4 m tall and weighs 282.8 kg.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex describes a counter-puncher: Rhyperior deflects attacks with its carapace to throw foes off balance, then drives its drill into them. It loads rocks into the holes in its palms, up to three per arm, and fires them by tightening its muscles. The ammunition is not always rock: the Pokédex says it sometimes launches a Geodude or Roggenrola instead. Its carapace can survive volcanic eruptions.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives far up in the mountains.

### Powers

Rhyperior can have Lightning Rod or Solid Rock, which weakens super-effective hits, with Reckless hidden. Rock Wrecker comes at level 75 in Scarlet and Violet, alongside Megahorn, Horn Drill, Earthquake and Stone Edge. Base Attack 140 and Defense 130 make it a hard-hitting tank, though base Speed is only 40.

### Name origin

Rhyperior may combine 'rhinoceros', 'rhyolite', 'Hyperion' and 'superior'. The Japanese name is Dosidon (ドサイドン), perhaps from do (土 'ground', 怒 'anger', or a prefix meaning 'very') plus Sidon, Rhydon's Japanese name.

### Design inspiration

Rhyperior adds Ankylosaurus, bullet-resistant vests and cannon artillery to the rhinoceros, kaiju and ceratopsid ideas behind Rhydon. Bulbapedia also sees a miner with a drill, wrecking ball, safety vest and hard hat. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Rhyperior evolves from Rhydon through trade while Rhydon holds a Protector; it has no further evolution.

### In the games

Rhyperior first appeared in Diamond and Pearl. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by transfer or trade, and The Indigo Disk lets you evolve a Rhydon into one and features it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Arceus it turns up in the Crimson Mirelands, Cobalt Coastlands and Coronet Highlands, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Palmer's Rhyperior made its series debut in 'Challenging a Towering Figure!', where Rock Wrecker and Megahorn helped it beat Ash's Grotle. Remo's Rhyperior, nicknamed Rhypo, faced Alain's Charizard at the Lumiose Conference in 'Analysis Versus Passion!'.

### Fun facts

- Among Generation IV's Rock types it has the highest base stat total, 535.
- Bulbapedia says Rhyperior was the only known Pokémon able to learn Rock Wrecker before Generation V, and again in Generation IX.
- The Rhyhorn line holds the only Pokémon with Ground as their first type and Rock as their second.
