Paradox Pokémon · Dragon/Dark-type

![Roaring Moon official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/1005.webp)

Roaring Moon is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)/[Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 1005 (#1005) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 2 m tall and weighs 380 kg.

Roaring Moon is a blue-and-red Paradox Pokémon whose wings curl into crescent moons, and it looks like a far wilder Salamence. The Pokédex is cagey about it: one entry says it may be the creature named in an expedition journal, the other that a dubious magazine links it to a strange phenomenon in a certain region.

## How to pronounce Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon is pronounced **ROR-ing MOON**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Roaring Moon is a four-legged dragon 2.0 m tall and 380 kg, mostly blue with a red underside marked in yellow. Huge red wings rise from its back and curl up into crescent shapes, jagged light-blue spikes jut from the sides of its head, and white ridges sit above its eyes. Its front legs are longer and bulkier than its hind legs, and each foot has three long claws.

### Behaviour

Reports summarised on Bulbapedia call Roaring Moon more savage than Salamence and advise keeping well clear of it. It is said to hunt at high speed, scattering feathers as it flies in search of prey. The Scarlet Pokédex says only that it may be the creature recorded under this name in a mysterious expedition journal.

### Habitat

In Pokémon Scarlet it is found in a cave in Area Zero, the crater at the heart of Paldea. The Pokédex names no other habitat.

### Powers

Its Ability Protosynthesis raises its highest stat in harsh sunlight or when it holds Booster Energy, and that stat is Attack at 139, the highest of any Dark type. It speeds up with Dragon Dance and attacks with Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, Night Slash and Throat Chop, with Flamethrower and Roost as support. A base Speed of 119 makes it a fast, strong physical attacker.

### Name origin

Its English name is simply 'roaring moon', the literal meaning of the Japanese name Todorokutsuki (トドロクツキ), from todoroku tsuki (轟く月).

### Design inspiration

Roaring Moon looks like a wilder take on Mega Salamence, which would also tie it to European dragons, and its feathers recall feathered dinosaurs. Bulbapedia notes the wings' crescent shape resembles a symbol common in Al-Andalus, the Iberian lands under Muslim rule, and the white ridge on its head faintly recalls Bagon's. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Roaring Moon is a Scarlet-version Paradox Pokémon, found in Area Zero in Pokémon Scarlet while Violet players must trade for it. It later returned alongside Iron Valiant as a 7-star Tera Raid Battle opponent in a Poké Portal News event, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia calls Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant counterparts: both have a base stat total of 590, higher than the 570 of most non-Legendary Paradox Pokémon.
- Bulbapedia records Roaring Moon as the theme of a McDonald's activity-sheet pack, and as a card, in the 2024 Pokémon toy giveaway.
- Bulbapedia notes that in both the Paldea and National Pokédex lists, Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant sit apart from the other ordinary Paradox Pokémon.
