Scatterbug is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)-type Pokémon, the Scatterdust Pokémon, number 664 (#0664) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 2.5 kg.

Scatterbug is the Scatterdust Pokémon, a tiny Bug-type caterpillar that turns the poison in its food into a black powder and coats itself with it. The powder paralyses on contact, which keeps hungry bird Pokémon away.

## How to pronounce Scatterbug

Scatterbug is pronounced **SKAT-er-bug**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Scatterbug is a black caterpillar, 0.3 m long and 2.5 kg, with a big head split by a line from forehead to mouth. Its large beige eyes have square pupils, and it has a single pointed tooth, three white hairs on its head and a white ruff round its neck.

### Behaviour

When bird Pokémon attack, Scatterbug spews its poisonous black powder, and the attacker is paralysed on contact. The powder is its main defence. The plants it picks vary with the place it lives.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says its powder keeps its temperature steady, so it copes with any region or climate. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in South Province (Areas One and Five), and in Legends: Z-A across Lumiose and in Hyperspace Lumiose in the Mega Dimension DLC.

### Diet

Many kinds of plants, even poisonous leaves and roots, which the Pokédex says it turns into powder.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Shield Dust, which blocks the extra effects of incoming moves, and Compound Eyes, which raises its accuracy, with Friend Guard hidden. It learns Stun Spore at level 6, though it evolves at level 9. Its best base stat is Defense at 40.

### Name origin

Scatterbug combines 'scatter' and 'bug', and may nod to 'litterbug'. The Japanese name is Kofukimushi (コフキムシ), which may blend kofuki ('powder-covered', as in a cockchafer's name) with mushi ('bug').

### Design inspiration

Scatterbug looks like a caterpillar, perhaps a carpet moth larva, which eats through fabric and builds cocoons from it, or a silk moth larva. The square specks of powder may be confetti or screen pixels. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Scatterbug becomes Spewpa at level 9, and Spewpa becomes Vivillon at level 12. Bulbapedia says Scatterbug and Spewpa each come in 20 look-alike forms that decide which Vivillon pattern they become.

### In the games

In X and Y, its first games, Scatterbug is found on Route 2 and in Santalune Forest. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it appears in Hau'oli City through the QR Scanner's Island Scan, on Thursdays.

### In the anime

Scatterbug debuted in 'Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!'. In 'To Catch a Pokémon Smuggler!' Ash and his friends rescue one from the smuggler Dolan.

### Fun facts

- Its base stat total of 200 is the lowest of any Generation VI Pokémon.
