# Scizor

Pincer Pokémon · Bug/Steel-type

![Scizor official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/212.webp)

Scizor is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Pincer Pokémon, number 212 (#0212) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 118 kg.

Scizor is the Pincer Pokémon, a red, metal-bodied mantis whose pincers carry eye-like markings, so that with them raised it looks as if it has three heads. The Pokédex says one swing of a pincer crushes a boulder, and that its body is as hard as steel.

## How to pronounce Scizor

Scizor is pronounced **SY-zer**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Scizor said out loud:

[Listen](https://pokee.si/audio/names/212.mp3)

In Japanese it is ハッサム (Hassam).

## Lore

### Biology

Scizor is 1.8 m (5'11") tall and 118 kg (260.1 lbs). Its body and even its muscles are metal, and its pincers make up a third of its weight. Black eyespots with yellow centres mark them. It has wings, but the Pokédex says it flaps them to regulate its temperature, since otherwise its metal body would overheat and melt.

### Behaviour

Scizor raises its eye-patterned pincers to scare foes off. Once it has identified an enemy, the Pokédex says, it keeps beating it with its steel-hard pincers until nothing but scraps remain. Bulbapedia says it is rarely found in the wild.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland. In Scarlet and Violet you can evolve Scyther, meet it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids, or find it in the Indigo Disk's Canyon and Savanna Biomes. In Legends: Z-A you evolve Scyther, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Swarm and Technician, with Light Metal hidden; Technician powers up weak moves such as Bullet Punch (40 base power). Iron Head and X-Scissor hit harder, and Swords Dance raises its attack. Mega Scizor, from Generation VI, has longer serrated pincers that Bulbapedia says can stab through concrete, but it starts to melt if it stays Mega too long. Base Attack is 130, or 150 as Mega Scizor.

### Name origin

Scizor may be a corruption of 'scissor', or a blend of 'scissor' and 'razor'. The Japanese name is Hassam (ハッサム), which may come from hasamu (剪む, 'to clip or snip').

### Design inspiration

Scizor may draw on mantises or wasp mantidflies, and its pincers resemble the claws of crabs, with the eyespots creating the extra heads. Mega Scizor's added black plating may be based on samurai armour. Bulbapedia names no designer, so these are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Scyther turns into Scizor if it is traded carrying a Metal Coat, which costs it the Flying type and gives it Steel.

### In the games

Scizor is a famous explorer in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, frozen in ice by Froslass for decades; once freed, he grants your team the Secret Rank. The species first appeared in Gold and Silver.

### In the anime

Goh's Scyther evolves into Scizor in 'Searching for Chivalry!', when a trade machine sends it away holding the Metal Coat that Wikstrom gave it. Wikstrom's own Mega Scizor briefly fights Diantha's Gardevoir in the film 'Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction'.

### Fun facts

- Scyther, Scizor and Kleavor each add up to 500 in base stats, so Scyther's two evolutions are the only ones in the game data that gain nothing in total.
- An early Spaceworld '97 demo appears to show a different Evolution of Scyther, Shizāsu (シザース), a Bug and Flying type that evolved at level 41.
- Bulbapedia notes Scizor is the only Steel type with two or more pairs of wings, and that in Generation II its category was 'Scissors Pokémon'.
