![Scraggy official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/559.webp)

Scraggy is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Fighting](https://pokee.si/types/fighting)-type Pokémon, the Shedding Pokémon, number 559 (#0559) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 11.8 kg.

Scraggy is the Shedding Pokémon, a Dark and Fighting type with a skull so thick and a temper so short that it headbutts anyone who meets its eye. Its loose shed skin hangs like baggy trousers.

## How to pronounce Scraggy

Scraggy is pronounced **SKRAG-ee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Scraggy is a small, bipedal lizard with a yellow head, a cream body, a scaly red belly and loose yellow skin hanging around its legs like trousers. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 11.8 kg. The Pokédex says it can haul the rubbery skin up to its neck to take less damage.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says Scraggy headbutts anyone who makes eye contact and is proud of its sturdy skull, though the weight of it leaves Scraggy unstable. Small groups walk around lazily, and the saggiest skin apparently earns the most respect.

### Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it needs The Indigo Disk, where it appears in the Canyon Biome and in 1-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it roams several Lumiose districts and the Sewers, and Hyperspace Lumiose in the Mega Dimension DLC.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Shed Skin, which can cure a status condition, and Moxie, with Intimidate hidden. It learns Headbutt, Brick Break, Crunch and High Jump Kick. Base Attack is a solid 75, but its Speed is only 48.

### Name origin

Scraggy may come from 'scraggy' (scrawny) or 'scraggly', with hints of 'scrappy', 'saggy' and 'baggy'. The Japanese name is Zuruggu (ズルッグ), which may involve zuru ('sly').

### Design inspiration

Scraggy may be modelled on a lizard shedding its skin, and Bulbapedia suggests the sagging trousers may also nod to hip hop and punk fashion. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Scraggy evolves into Scrafty at level 39.

### In the games

Scraggy has a supporting role in Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. In its debut games, Black and White, wild ones live on Routes 4 and 18 and in the Desert Resort.

### In the anime

Ash's Scraggy hatched from an Egg in its debut episode, headstrong and overconfident and eager to beat every new Pokémon. In 'Turning Heads and Training Hard!' a Team Skull Grunt's Scraggy lost quickly to Ilima's Eevee.

### Fun facts

- Despite having no Dragon typing, Scraggy and Scrafty are both in the Dragon Egg Group, alongside Ground.
- In 2016 Scraggy was one of the McDonald's promotional Pokémon toys, built to duck into itself.
- In Pokémon Adventures a Scraggy and a Scrafty team up to steal an accordion meant for a BW Agency commercial.
