# Scyther

Mantis Pokémon · Bug/Flying-type

![Scyther official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/123.webp)

Scyther is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Mantis Pokémon, number 123 (#0123) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 56 kg.

Scyther is the Mantis Pokémon, a green Bug and Flying type so fast that the Pokédex says it can seem to be more than one Scyther at once. Its scythes sharpen with every cut, and its entries have called it ninja-like since the first games.

## How to pronounce Scyther

Scyther is pronounced **SY-dher**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Scyther is a green, bipedal insectoid, 1.5 m tall and 56 kg, with large white scythes for arms, three blunt horns and two pairs of cream wings that the Pokédex says it very rarely uses to fly. Females have larger abdomens than males. Its colouring camouflages it in grass.

### Behaviour

Scyther is a ninja-like ambusher. The Pokédex says it leaps from tall grass, confuses its prey with quick movements, cleaves it, and dresses it with its scythes before eating. Young Scyther are said to share a home deep in the mountains while they train with their scythes, and a forest patch full of felled trees marks a Scyther's territory.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, and Bulbapedia adds forests. In Scarlet and Violet it lives across Paldea's South Province, North Province and Casseroya Lake and in the Indigo Disk's Savanna and Canyon Biomes. In Legends: Z-A it is in Wild Zone 13, with more in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Swarm and Technician, with Steadfast hidden. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Slash, X-Scissor and Air Slash, and Swords Dance sharpens its attack. With 110 base Attack and 105 base Speed it is a fast physical attacker.

### Name origin

Scyther may combine 'scythe' with the suffix '-er', for something that cuts. The Japanese name is Strike (ストライク), the same English word.

### Design inspiration

Scyther appears to be based on a mantis, with arms shaped like scythes. Its reptilian head and claws resemble a dromaeosaur dinosaur, and Bulbapedia sees similarities to the kamikiri, a hair-cutting yokai. An early design appeared in the Capsule Monsters pitch to Nintendo. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Trade Scyther while it holds a Metal Coat and it becomes Scizor, while using a Black Augurite on it makes Kleavor.

### In the games

In Pokémon Pokopia, a Scyther teaches Ditto the move Cut. A Generation I original, it was a Red exclusive in the international Red and Blue, found in the Safari Zone and at the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City.

### In the anime

Tracey catches an ageing Scyther in 'Tracey Gets Bugged', after it settles its quarrel with the swarm it led; Bulbapedia says swarms pick leaders by combat. In 'Gettin' The Bugs Out', Bugsy's Scyther fans away Fire moves with Swords Dance.

### Fun facts

- Its English name in the Red and Green beta was Stryke.
- Bulbapedia notes that no other Pokémon with two possible Evolutions had both of them added after its own debut; for Scyther, Scizor came in Generation II and Kleavor in Generation VIII.
- In 'Showdown at Dark City', Scyther rages at the colour red, which Bulbapedia suggests may nod to it being a Red and FireRed exclusive.
