# Seadra

Dragon Pokémon · Water-type

![Seadra official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/117.webp)

Seadra is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Dragon Pokémon, number 117 (#0117) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 25 kg.

Seadra is a spiny seahorse whose venom gets thicker and stronger while it raises its young, a job the Pokédex gives to the male. The Pokédex says careless touching of its spines can make a person faint.

## How to pronounce Seadra

Seadra is pronounced **SEE-druh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is シードラ.

## Lore

### Biology

Seadra is a blue seahorse, 1.2 m tall and 25 kg, with a long tubular snout, narrow black eyes, spiny pectoral fins and a large coiled tail. Two dorsal fins with sharp cream tips leak venom. The Pokédex says touching the back fin causes numbness, yet its spines, fins and bones are valued in traditional medicine.

### Behaviour

The male raises the young, and the Pokédex says a Seadra caring for them uses its toxic spines to see off intruders. It sleeps wedged between branches of coral, where harvesters who do not notice it can be stung. It hunts by spinning its body into whirlpools that weaken prey, then swallows the prey whole; the Pokédex claims these can swallow fishing boats.

### Habitat

The Pokédex puts Seadra in the sea, nesting in coral. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by transfer or trade, and The Indigo Disk adds it to the Canyon, Coastal and Polar Biomes and the Torchlit Labyrinth.

### Powers

Poison Point has a 30% chance of poisoning attackers that touch it, Sniper strengthens critical hits, and Damp is hidden. It learns Dragon Pulse at level 44, Hydro Pump at 51 and Dragon Dance at 58. Its Defense and Special Attack are both 95, but its Special Defense of 45 is a weakness.

### Name origin

Seadra may combine 'sea', 'seahorse', 'dragon', 'seadragon' (a relative of seahorses) and the Hydra, a many-headed water monster of Greek myth. The Japanese name is Seadra (シードラ).

### Design inspiration

Seadra is a seahorse, perhaps a spiny one. Bulbapedia reads its spiky, poisonous fins as lionfish-like. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Seadra evolves from Horsea at level 32 and into Kingdra when traded holding a Dragon Scale. Bulbapedia notes that in FireRed and LeafGreen this evolution is interrupted until you have the National Pokédex.

### In the games

Seadra is one of the original Generation I Pokémon, and Bulbapedia notes no Trainer or story role for it in the core series. The Indigo Disk also offers it in 3-star Tera Raid Battles, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In 'Mewtwo Strikes Back' and its remake, Mewtwo captured Fergus's Seadra and cloned it. In 'Looking Out for Number Two!', Goh rescued a wild Seadra from a Sharpedo and gave it a Dragon Scale, and in return it helped him find a Kingdra.

### Fun facts

- Seadra is unique among non-Poison types, Bulbapedia says, in being able to have Poison Point.
- Its Gold and HeartGold Pokédex says an examination of its cells found a gene Horsea does not have, and that this became a hot topic.
- Bulbapedia says its EV yield of 1 Defense and 1 Special Attack is unique among Pokémon.

## Pokédex entries

Seadra's mouth is slender, but its suction power is strong. In an instant, Seadra can suck in food that's larger than the opening of its mouth. *(Shield)*

It's the males that raise the offspring. While Seadra are raising young, the spines on their backs secrete thicker and stronger poison. *(Sword)*

Touching the back fin causes numbness. It hooks its tail to coral to stay in place while sleeping. *(Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)*

Seadra generates whirlpools by spinning its body. The whirlpools are strong enough to swallow even fishing boats. This Pokémon weakens prey with these currents, then swallows it whole. *(Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)*

Seadra sleeps after wriggling itself between the branches of coral. Those trying to harvest coral are occasionally stung by this Pokémon's poison barbs if they fail to notice it. *(Ruby, Omega Ruby)*

It is capable of swimming backwards by rapidly flapping its winglike pectoral fins and stout tail. *(LeafGreen, Y)*
